Trout and Kershaw have their own MVP trophies, share a geographic market (and now a billboard)
Trout and Kershaw share a billboard in downtown L.A.
Roses are red, violets are blue ... and this fancy new billboard is both because Los Angeles is getting ready to kick off the 2015 MLB season with an exhibition Freeway Series.
The Angels and Dodgers will each open up the new season on Monday, April 6, against the Mariners and Padres, respectively. But, before that, they'll rekindle their local rivalry with two games at Angel Stadium and a third at Dodger Stadium.
As if people in Los Angeles need another reason to be excited about baseball, the Angels and Dodgers jointly unveiled the above billboard at the intersection of Highland and Wilshire on Tuesday.
The duality of the promo is its main selling point, as AL MVP Mike Trout and NL MVP Clayton Kershaw are just the 11th pair of players in MLB history to win the awards in the same market in the same year.
The feat was first accomplished in Philadelphia in 1932 when Jimmie Foxx won AL MVP for the Athletics and Chuck Klein took home NL honors for the Phillies. It was last achieved by Miguel Tejada and Barry Bonds of the A's and Giants in 2002.
Though this exhibition series will serve as quite the appetizer for fans in L.A., they'll have to wait a while for the main course. The Angels and Dodgers don't face off in regular season play until July 31 at Angel Stadium.
