Not many people can say they raced Jackie Robinson on ice, but Vin Scully can

Vin Scully, who has announced Dodgers games since 1950 and is still going strong, is an invaluable living connection to a past era of baseball. Jackie Robinson's birthday is a fine time to remember that, and benefit from Scully's incredible lifetime of memories.

During a broadcast in May, Scully recounted the story of him ice skating with Robinson and Robinson's wife Rachel during a trip to the Catskills. New York native Scully was already familiar with the discipline and owned his own skates. Robinson, having grown up in Southern California, had never been on skates in his life -- but insisted on racing Scully, because "that's how I'm going to learn."
