The Wrigley Field ivy was hungry, so it ate Kris Bryant's double

We've heard treacherous tales of the Wrigley Field ivy devouring objects before. Sometimes baseballs, sometimes former baseball players. Nothing is safe.
And if you were watching Thursday's Nationals-Cubs game, you may have noticed the ivy strike again -- swallowing up Kris Bryant's fly ball in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The flora's ferocious appetite turned a possible triple or more into a ground-rule double -- leaving Bryant at second and Tommy La Stella at third. Interviewed after the incident, the ivy showed little remorse:

Although they didn't score on that play, the ivy did seem to jump-start the offense. The Cubs loaded the bases on an Anthony Rizzo intentional walk and took a 2-0 lead on a Ben Zobrist single:

Chicago's second baseman, who tallied four RBIs, also added some insurance with a two-run homer in the eighth:

The two first-place teams will battle it out in Game 2 of the four-game set on Friday, with Nats ace Max Scherzer (3-1, 3.55 ERA) trying to even things up against John Lackey (3-1, 4.32 ERA).
