Gibson and Co. striving to solve Cahill's struggles

WASHINGTON -- The search for the solution to Trevor Cahill's struggles continued Wednesday, with D-backs manager Kirk Gibson looking at video of the right-hander's tough start Tuesday night against the Nationals.

"You look at the game and evaluate and try to get him in the right frame of mind to execute his pitches for his next start, whenever that is," Gibson said. "Just not consistent throwing the ball where he wants to throw it. He gets 0-2, he makes bad pitches, he walks the No. 8 hitter."

After the game -- in which he allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings -- Cahill said he didn't feel like he was consistent with his delivery.

Catcher Miguel Montero said it didn't look like Cahill's arm angle was consistent -- something that Gibson noticed as well.

"You can see it," Gibson said. "I'm not going to go any deeper into that, but something tells me he needs to simplify things. That's what happens when you struggle -- everybody overthinks things. When you can simplify things and think less, you just execute better."

Cahill is 0-4 with a 9.30 ERA in five starts during the month of June, and he is next scheduled to pitch Sunday against the Braves in Atlanta.

"He's got good stuff; we all know that," Gibson said. "We have to get him straightened out. We'll probably talk to him tomorrow and see where he's at and go from there."
