PHOENIX -- For five innings and two trips through the Phillies' batting order D-backs left-hander Robbie Ray cruised, allowing just three hits and no runs.
The third time through, however, was a different story as the Phillies offense came alive and the night fell apart for Ray and the D-backs, who fell, 8-0.
"I don't know about third time around," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "Those guys they've been swinging the bat better. They squared a couple of balls up and a couple balls fell, but give them credit they did a nice job."
Ray also did not think there was anything to the fact that it was the third time through the order that tripped him up.
"I think just timely hitting," he said. "I think I made good pitches in the inning. I was still getting ground balls and weak contact. I think there was only one pitch that they hit hard -- that was [Cody] Asche the double down the line -- but they just hit them where we weren't."
Ray's night finally ended due to a blister on his left middle finger with an 0-1 count on Odubel Herrera with two on and no outs in the seventh. He allowed four runs on nine hits and did not walk a batter while fanning seven.
The blister likely will not put Ray's next start in jeopardy especially since he will get an extra day of rest due to Thursday's off-day.
Of more concern for the D-backs is the fact that after starting their 10-game road trip with a 7-1 record they have now dropped three straight and their home woes continue.
"We know how good we are," Ray said. "We know how we can play. We just have to do it. We have to focus more, probably, and just go out there and do what we know how to do."
