D-backs recall Bryan Shaw from Reno; select Jake Elmore from Reno

Place Willie Bloomquist on the 15-day disabled list; designate Mike Zagurski for assignment

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks announced they have recalled right-handed pitcher Bryan Shaw from Triple-A Reno, selected the contract of infielder Jake Elmore from Reno, placed infielder Willie Bloomquist on the 15-day disabled list with a strained lower back (retro to Aug. 9) and designated left-handed pitcher Mike Zagurski for assignment, according to D-backs’ Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Shaw, 24, was 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA (2 ER in 8.0 IP), 10 strikeouts and a .207 (6-for-29) opponents average in 8 relief appearances with the Aces in 2012. He also went 1-4 with a 4.26 ERA (18 ER in 38.0 IP) and 2 saves in 43 games with the D-backs before being optioned to Reno on July 22.

Elmore, 25, hit .344 (144-for-419) with 30 doubles, 9 triples, 1 home run, 73 RBI, 74 walks, 95 runs scored and 32 stolen bases in 108 games with Reno this season. He ranks among all Minor Leaguers in runs scored (7th) and walks (10th), and is among the Pacific Coast League leaders in walks (1st), stolen bases (2nd), runs scored (2nd), hits (2nd), on-base percentage (3rd, .442), average (5th, .344) and triples (6th).

The 5-foot-9, 183-pounder was drafted by the D-backs in the 34th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State University. Elmore, who was the starting second baseman on the PCL mid-season All-Star Team, would become the second Sun Devil to play for Arizona in club history, joining Bloomquist.

Elmore will wear No. 14.

Bloomquist, 34, hit .300 (97-for-323) with 21 doubles, 5 triples, and 22 RBI in 79 games with the D-backs this season. He has appeared in 64 games at shortstop, 11 at third base and 1 each at second and left and right field.

Zagurski, 29, was 0-0 with a 6.18 ERA (19 ER in 27.2 IP) in 32 games with Arizona in 2012. He was claimed by the D-backs off waivers from the Phillies on Sept. 22, 2011.
