The D-backs reinstated right-handed reliever Chris Devenski from the restricted list Thursday and optioned right-hander Yoan López to their alternate training site.

Devenski, who was signed to a Minor League deal by the D-backs in the offseason, won a bullpen spot on the Opening Day roster after an outstanding spring.

After making appearances on April 4 and 6, Devenski was placed on the restricted list April 7. D-backs manager Torey Lovullo and general manager Mike Hazen have both declined to say why the 30-year-old was put on the restricted list.

"I was dealing with some personal matters back home," Devenski said. "I'm not going to really go into detail about it, but took me away from the game for a little bit and I really had to take care of it. I'm glad to be back here. The support [the D-backs organization] has shown me has been tremendous. I'm just ready to get back on the field."

Before going on the restricted list, Devenski was part of the backend of the Arizona bullpen and was expected to play a key role this year.

"Really excited that he's here," Lovullo said. "I connected with him just for a couple seconds in my office, still looking to continue that conversation, but just nice seeing him walk through those doors and get him back helping us win baseball games."

López has made 11 appearances for the D-backs this year, compiling a 6.30 ERA while allowing three home runs in 10 innings.

Over his last four outings, López had allowed at least one run in each.

"Yoan is very close," Lovullo said. "He has some really good outings. And if he throws 20 pitches, he throws 15 quality pitches and then gets nicked up with one or two mistakes. We want him to eliminate those mistakes and continue to show the consistency that we think is in there because we've seen it before. And it's about making quality pitches for an entire outing."

Rotation not set
Lovullo said that he has not decided whether Riley Smith, who was called up from the alternate training site Wednesday to start in place of the injured Taylor Widener, would remain in the rotation going forward.

Smith allowed three runs on six hits over four-plus innings, with all of the runs coming in the fifth.

"We're having those discussions right now," Lovullo said. "We haven't quite figured out exactly what direction we're going to go, but he threw the ball good [Wednesday night]."
