D-backs acquire Eduardo Escobar from Minnesota Twins

The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired INF Eduardo Escobar (@escobarmaracay) from the Minnesota Twins for RHP Jhoan Durán, OF Ernie De La Trinidad and OF Gabriel Maciel. The D-backs also recalled INF Ildemaro Vargas (@ildemaro_tigre) from Triple-A Reno and placed INF Jake Lamb on the 10-day disabled list with a left shoulder contusion. To make room on the 40-man roster, Arizona designated INF Jack Reinheimer for assignment.

The D-backs also recalled INF Ildemaro Vargas (@ildemaro_tigre) from Triple-A Reno and placed INF Jake Lamb on the 10-day disabled list with a left shoulder contusion. Escobar, 29, will report to the D-backs for tomorrow's game at San Diego. He leads the Majors with 37 doubles this season, and is batting .274 (101-for-369)/.338 OBP/.514 SLG with 37 doubles, 3 triples, 15 home runs, 63 RBI, 34 walks and 45 runs scored in 97 games. He is hitting .390 (39-for-100) with 13 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs and 49 RBI with runners in scoring position, the fifth-best average in baseball behind Yuli Gurriel/HOU (.440), Joe Mauer/MIN (.426), Matt Kemp/LAD (.403) and Brian Anderson/MIA (.400). The 5-foot-10, 185-pound switch-hitter is batting .282 (72-for-255) with 30 doubles, 3 triples, 13 home runs, 44 RBI and 20 walks as a left-handed hitter and .257 (29-for-113) with 7 doubles, 2 home runs, 19 RBI and 14 walks as a right-handed hitter. He's made 77 appearances (73 starts) this season at third base, 21 (20 starts) at shortstop and 1 start at second base.
 
Since 2014, Escobar ranks among the Major League switch-hitting leaders in doubles (T-5th, 133) and extra-base hits (7th, 209). He recorded consecutive 30-double seasons in 2014 (35) and 2015 (31), becoming the first switch hitter in Twins history to reach 30 doubles in consecutive years. He was 1 of 6 finalists for the 2017 Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award, given annually to the player whose on-field performance and contributions to his community inspire others to higher levels of achievement.
 
Escobar is a career .256 (595-for-2322)/.307 OBP/.415 SLG hitter with 142 doubles, 19 triples, 63 home runs, 287 RBI, 162 walks and 280 runs scored in 716 games over parts of 8 Major League seasons with the Chicago White Sox (2011-12) and Twins (2012-18). He has made an appearance at every defensive position except first base, including 328 at shortstop, 257 at third base, 59 at second base, 43 in left field and 1 in right field, center field, catcher and pitcher. He was acquired by Minnesota on July 28, 2012 for LHP Francisco Liriano. He was originally signed by the White Sox as a non-drafted free agent on Jan. 28, 2006.  
 
Vargas, 27, was a 2018 Pacific Coast League mid-season All-Star and has hit safely in 24 consecutive games, batting .390 (41-for-105) with 10 doubles, 1 triple, 11 RBI and 9 walks during that stretch. The streak is the longest active streak in the PCL and the second longest in Reno history, behind only Jake Elmore's 31-game streak in 2012. He was hitting .300 (120-for-400)/.340 OBP/.425 SLG with 22 doubles, 8 triples, 4 home runs, 43 RBI, 23 walks and 54 runs scored in 92 games for the Aces this season, ranking among the PCL leaders in hits (2nd), at-bats (2nd), triples (3rd) and doubles (T-9th).
 
A native of Caripito, Venezuela, Vargas made his Major League debut for Arizona in 2017, hitting .308 (4-for-13) with 1 double and 4 RBI in 12 games. Over 4 Minor League seasons with the D-backs, he has 543 hits and 132 walks with only 131 strikeouts. He has played parts of 11 seasons in the Minors, hitting .286 (948-for-3309)/.342 OBP/.388 SLG with 178 doubles, 30 triples, 33 home runs and 343 RBI in 871 games in the St. Louis Cardinals' (2008-14) and D-backs' (2015-current) organizations.
 
Lamb, 27, is hitting .222 (46-for-207)/.307 OBP/.348 SLG with 8 doubles, 6 home runs, 31 RBI, 26 walks and 34 runs scored in 56 games for the D-backs this season.  
 
Durán, 20, was 5-4 with a 4.73 ERA (34 ER in 64.2 IP), a .268 opponent average and 71 strikeouts in 15 starts for Single-A Kane County this season. He was signed by the D-backs as an non-drafted free agent on Dec. 13, 2014.
 
De La Trinidad, 22, batted .311 (97-for-312)/.403 OBP/.442 SLG with 13 doubles, 2 triples, 8 home runs, 56 RBI and 45 walks in 91 games for Kane County in 2018. The Phoenix, Ariz., native was selected by the D-backs in the 19th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
 
Maciel, 19, hit .287 (80-for-279)/.362 OBP/.333 SLG with 10 doubles, 1 home run, 16 RBI and 30 walks in 68 games for Kane County this season. The native of Londrina, Brazil, was signed by Arizona as a non-drafted free agent on Oct. 2, 2015.
 
Reinheimer, 26, batted .237 (45-for-190)/.312 OBP/.353 SLG with 9 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, 21 RBI and 20 walks in 50 games for Reno in 2018.
