PHOENIX -- The D-backs said all the right things after their 10-9 loss in 11 innings against the Giants on Friday night.

They talked about how proud they were that they fought back and had tough at-bats right up until the end. They said they would be able to process it and come back ready to play Saturday.

But let’s not undersell it -- this was a gut-wrenching loss for the D-backs, who are fighting for their playoff lives.

The D-backs fell to 61-62 and 3 1/2 games behind the Cubs and Phillies for the National League’s second Wild Card spot. And they added another team in front of them, as the Giants moved one game in front of them. They now need to get past five teams.

“It was a good fight,” shortstop Nick Ahmed said. “We were down against a good team and a good bullpen, and we came back and fought.”

The teams combined for 12 home runs, the most in any game at Chase Field. Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski hit three.

There’s no question the D-backs showed fight in coming back, as five of their six homers came after the seventh inning.

The Giants appeared to be on their way to victory after their half of the eighth inning, but the D-backs managed to hit three home runs in the bottom half of the frame. Eduardo Escobar and Wilmer Flores each hit solo homers and pinch-hitter Adam Jones tied the game with a two-out homer.

“It was a very emotional dugout,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. “These guys were grinding. There were some tremendous at-bats late, we had a number of home runs late and just a really nice approach late in the ballgame when it mattered the most.”

Once again, the Giants seemed to take control of the game in the 10th when Kevin Pillar hit a two-run homer, his second of the game. The Giants also had closer Will Smith on the mound to start the bottom of the 10th as he looked to notch his 30th save.

Flores, though, opened the inning with a homer, his second of the game, and Ahmed followed with one later in the inning to tie it up again.

“The first one was a changeup [that] I was looking for, and I got it and put a good swing on it,” Flores said of his homer in the eighth. “The second one, it was a fastball. I just reacted to it. I wasn’t looking for it, but I put a good swing on it.”

Finally in the 11th, the Giants delivered the winning blow when Yastrzemski homered for the third time.

The D-backs did put the tying run on base to open the bottom of the 11th. And before he made the game’s final out, Christian Walker put together a nine-pitch at-bat.

“We’ll be ready tomorrow,” Ahmed said. “I’m proud of the guys. We went out, got down a couple of times, and we fought back both times. I love the makeup of the team, in that regard. If we do that the rest of the way, we’ll be all right.”
