D-backs option Hernandez, recall De La Rosa place Chavez on Disabled List and select Davidson
PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) optioned right-handed pitcher David Hernandez (@DHern_30) to Triple-A Reno following last night's game and today recalled left-handed pitcher Eury De la Rosa from Triple-A Reno, placed infielder Eric Chavez on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to August 10) with a left knee strain and selected infielder Matt Davidson from Reno, according to D-backs' Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.
De La Rosa, 23, appeared in 2 games with the D-backs from July 11-21, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts. He made his Major League debut on July 14 vs. Brewers (0 ER in 2.0 IP), becoming the fourth reliever in club history to throw at least 2.0 scoreless innings in his debut, joining Greg Aquino (2.0 IP on July 2, 2004 vs. Twins), Josh Collmenter (2.0 IP on April 17, 2011 vs. Giants) and Max Scherzer (4.1 IP on April 29, 2008 vs. Astros).
In 44 games for the Aces, he was 3-5 with a 5.26 ERA (29 ER in 49.2 IP), 27 walks and 49 strikeouts. He has limited left-handed hitters to a .202 average (18-for-89) with 15 walks and 26 strikeouts.
Davidson, 22, is getting his first stint in the Majors and will wear No. 24. The D-backs' supplemental first-round selection (35th overall) in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft entered this season rated by Baseball America and MLB.com as the D-backs' No. 4 prospect and was also cited by Baseball America as the Best Power Hitter in the D-backs' farm system.
In 108 games for the Aces this season, he is hitting .278 (115-for-413) with 31 doubles, 3 triples, 16 homers and 68 RBI along with .348 on-base and .484 slugging percentages. On July 14, he became the first D-backs farmhand to win MLB All-Star Futures Game Most Valuable Player honors (Larry Doby Award) after going 1-for-2 with a 2-run home run at Citi Field. Then on July 16, he won the Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby at Aces Ballpark in Reno, Nev.
Hernandez, 28, was 4-6 with 2 saves (7 opportunities) and a 5.59 ERA (30 ER in 48.1 IP) with 20 walks and 50 strikeouts in 48 relief appearances for the D-backs.
Chavez, 35, has hit .299 (58-for-194) with 13 doubles, 2 triples, 9 home runs and 40 RBI in 62 games for the D-backs. He was on the disabled list from May 31-June 27 with a strained right oblique.
