D-backs spoil Jennings' debut in 13 innings
MIAMI -- The managerial debut for Dan Jennings turned into an endurance test, and the D-backs were able to prevail. David Peralta's two-out RBI double in the 13th inning off Steve Cishek lifted Arizona to a 3-2 win on Monday at Marlins Park.
Peralta, in a 1-for-10 rut on the road trip, ripped his double to right and it snapped Arizona's four-game losing streak. Miami, meanwhile, has dropped four straight, and was unable to hand Jennings a victory in his first day as manager.
"I was waiting for that opportunity the whole game," Peralta said. "I got the opportunity to help the team. I know I faced him last year and I know what kind of pitches he had and I know he's not doing well right now. He threw me a slider backdoor on the first pitch and I was just waiting for a good pitch to hit and try not to do too much. Just get a base hit to bring the run, and he just hung a slider and I swung the bat and got a double. It was good to do that for the team."
Miami, meanwhile, has dropped four straight and was unable to hand Jennings a victory in his first day as manager. Jennings moved from general manager to manager, taking over for Mike Redmond, who was dismissed on Sunday.

"It's somewhat surreal," Jennings said of his first day in the dugout. "Other than the final outcome of the game, because you play them to win. But it was a surreal to be there in the moment. It definitely moves quicker in the dugout than it does in the suite."
Both starters were strong. Arizona's Rubby De La Rosa, who threw 94 pitches in nine innings, limited the Marlins to a two-run J.T. Realmuto home run in the seventh. Miami's Dan Haren logged a season-high eight innings, giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

An out away from being no-hit by Atlanta's Shelby Miller on Sunday, the Marlins were held without a run through six innings by De La Rosa. But Realmuto's two-run drive to left in the seventh inning snapped Miami's 16-inning scoreless streak and tied the game at 2.
The D-backs broke through against Haren in the fourth inning on Yasmany Tomas' two-run double to center.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First HR for Realmuto: Realmuto made his first MLB home run a significant one. In the seventh inning, the rookie catcher connected on a two-run homer off De La Rosa, which tied the game. The first big league homer for Realmuto came in his 134th career plate appearance, and his 104th plate appearance this season.
Ichiro ties the Bambino: With two singles on Monday night, Ichiro Suzuki reached another impressive milestone. The 41-year-old now has 2,873 career big league hits, which ties him with Babe Ruth. De La Rosa on cruise control: De La Rosa went out for the ninth inning of a 2-2 ballgame after throwing just 90 pitches (63 strikes). He needed just four more to retire the side in order to force extras. His previous career high was seven innings pitched, done 10 times in his career and most recently last week against the Nationals. More >

Owings on the fast track: After singling with one out in the 13th, Chris Owings got a big jump on CIshek and stole his fifth base of the season. When Tuffy Gosewisch sent a grounder to second, instead of the Marlins turning an inning-ending double play, Owings advanced to third and later scored on Peralta's RBI double.

Jennings slightly tinkered with the lineup on Monday night, inserting left-handed hitting Justin Bour in the cleanup spot behind Giancarlo Stanton. The reason is to provide some right-handed, left-handed balance to the middle of the order.
Ozuna misses game
About the time the Marlins were ready to take the field for batting practice, center fielder Marcell Ozuna was excused to go home to tend to a personal matter. Suzuki made the start in center. Ozuna is expected to be ready to play on Tuesday.
INSTANT REPLAY
The D-backs received a critical replay overturn with one out in the 13th inning. Suzuki tried to steal second, and he was called safe on a close play. But Arizona challenged, and after a review of one minute, four seconds the call was overturned. Gosewisch threw a strike to second baseman Aaron Hill, who applied the tag.

WHAT'S NEXT
D-backs: Arizona has won just one of Jeremy Hellickson's seven starts this season. Hellickson (1-3, 5.92 ERA), who has three straight no decisions, has surrendered four earned runs or more in three of his previous four outings and get the start at 4:10 p.m. PT.
Marlins: Tom Koehler (2-3 4.29 ERA) gets the start on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. ET in place of the injured Jarred Cosart, who was placed on the disabled list with vertigo after Monday's game. Koehler was removed from the rotation and pitched out of the bullpen on Saturday against Atlanta, tossing three scoreless innings. In his last start on May 11, he went six innings against the Dodgers and allowed one run on three hits and four walks.
