PHOENIX -- The D-backs used a five-run third inning to beat the Royals, 7-4, on Friday night at Chase Field, but they suffered a big loss in the process, as Arizona center fielder A.J. Pollock suffered a broken right elbow during the rally.
The Royals grabbed a 2-0 lead off Rubby De La Rosa thanks to a first-inning RBI by Mike Moustakas and a solo homer to lead off the second by Kendrys Morales.
The D-backs were able to break through against Royals starter Chris Young in the third inning as they sent 10 men to the plate, collecting five hits and scoring five runs.
Pollock, David Peralta, Jake Lamb, Yasmany Tomas and Rickie Weeks Jr. each collected RBIs in the frame.
Pollock was on third when Peralta hit a grounder to second base. Omar Infante threw home to try and get Pollock, who slid headfirst, touched home plate with his left hand and then grabbed his right elbow area in pain.
"Obviously right now we feel awful for A.J.," D-backs manager Chip Hale said after the game. "We're a family, and it's like having one of your family members taken away from you right now."
Young, who is expected to start Tuesday in place of Ian Kennedy, left with one out in the inning as the team wanted to keep him to 40 pitches before his first regular season start.
"I thought CY threw the ball good,'' manager Ned Yost said. "Danny Duffy was excellent, got his fastball up to 97. Morales is swinging the bat well. Everyone got to play nine [innings] tonight, so that was good. We're ready."
This was essentially the final exhibition game for most of the Royals regulars, who will fly home before Saturday's exhibition to get ready for Sunday night's season opener against the Mets.
Nick Ahmed added a solo homer in the eighth for the D-backs.
Up next for Royals: The Royals finish up the spring Saturday with a 2:10 p.m. CT game against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Phoenix. Right-hander Yordano Ventura, the Royals' No. 3 starter, will start for the Royals. Most of the Royals regulars will fly home to Kansas City early Saturday morning and not at the spring finale.
