SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Two of the three pitchers competing to be the D-backs' closer each threw an inning on Saturday afternoon, as Arizona fell, 11-2, to the Indians at Salt River Fields.
Yoshihisa Hirano, who spent the previous 12 seasons with the Orix Buffaloes of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball League, worked the fourth inning, and allowed a run on a pair of hard-hit doubles.
It was Hirano's first appearance, and he showed a bit of nerves when his first pitch of the game sailed to the backstop.
"It was the first time, so there were a little nerves going on," Hirano said. "I was trying to get my command on all my fastballs, but I was putting a little too much on it, so they were going up. I wasn't happy with the outing, but I'm going to build up from here, get my body prepared and get my fastball command."

Archie Bradley, meanwhile, worked the fifth inning, and allowed just one hit while striking out a batter, without allowing a run. His fastball was clocked as high as 97 mph.
The other pitcher in competition for the closer's spot, Brad Boxberger, worked a scoreless inning Friday, allowing a walk, while striking out one.

D-backs third baseman Jake Lamb took a ball off his right ankle in the third inning, and went to the ground before quickly getting up.
The ball left Erik Gonzalez's bat at 114 mph, per Statcast™.
"Well, it felt like 214," Lamb said. "I didn't see it off the bat. I saw it off my ankle."
Lamb was examined by Arizona trainers before staying in the game.
"I'm good," Lamb said. "Just a little wake-up call, you know? All timing is a little off, love that Game 1."

The D-backs are taking it slow with outfielder Jarrod Dyson, who missed most of September last year due to hernia surgery.
"He is building up," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "So all the running, all the agility stuff that he's doing, is in a controlled environment with the strength and conditioning coaches. I know that it's going to take a little bit of time where he's wide open. He's been held out of all of our baserunning activities. But, while we're baserunning, he's doing something behind the scenes building up to that."
