Bourn a key contributor since joining D-backs

Veteran outfielder goes 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs in win over Padres

PHOENIX -- In two weeks since joining the D-backs, Michael Bourn is proving just what he wanted to -- he can still play at a high level.
The D-backs were thin in outfield depth and signed the speedy veteran outfielder to a Minor League deal on May 10. He was called up to the Majors just five days later when David Peralta went on the disabled list with a wrist injury.
Bourn is becoming a solid contributor. The 33-year-old reached base four times, going 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs, two RBIs and a stolen base, in Saturday night's 8-7 win over the Padres at Chase Field.
"I'm still settling in, I just feel that you have to make the most of your opportunity, there's nothing else I can do more than that," Bourn said. "I just try to go out there and play baseball. I've been playing it for a while, so just try to use my experience as a key to it and just prove that I can still play."
Bourn, an 11-year veteran, is batting .423 (11-for-26) in nine games. He is 11-for-22 in his five starts and has multiple hits in four of them. Saturday marked his second three-hit performance.
Bourn was designated for assignment by the Braves on April 2. He then went to the Blue Jays organization where he played in nine games for Class A Advanced Dunedin. He was released by Toronto three days before signing with the D-backs.
"He's got a good stroke going," manager Chip Hale said. "I think it's exciting for a guy like that who's been bounced around here toward the end. There's a lot of life in that body and we're excited to have him."
Batting in the No. 2 hole, Bourn walked in the first inning and came around to score on a two-run single by Jake Lamb. Bourn contributed to a five-run rally in the second with a single, scoring on Paul Goldschmidt's two-run homer that pushed the D-backs lead to 7-1.

Bourn singled in the fourth and then stole second, improving to 3-for-3 on steal attempts. The speedster led the National League in steals three straight seasons from 2009-11 when playing in Houston and Atlanta.
In the sixth, Bourn capped his performance with a triple into the gap in left-center field.
"I didn't know much about him, just watching him play and playing against him, but you knew what he was capable of," Goldschmidt said. "It's been a big boost for us with David going down. It's tough, you can't really replace that, but he's done a great job stepping in."
