Abreu clears waivers, accepts Minors assignment

MIAMI -- Veteran outfielder Bobby Abreu has cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment by the Dodgers to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Abreu, designated for assignment Aug. 1 to make room for Shane Victorino, is the second veteran to accept a Minor League assignment in as many days, joining Tony Gwynn.

By returning to the organization, both players will be eligible to be added to the 40-man roster, called up for September and be eligible to be added to a postseason roster.

Abreu, 38, who was released by the Angels in April, hit .251 with two homers, 17 RBIs and a .359 on-base percentage in 70 games for the Dodgers.
