LOS ANGELES -- Braden Shipley, making only his second Major League start, blanked the Dodgers for six innings while Jean Segura homered and doubled in the D-backs' 4-2 win over the Dodgers on Saturday night.
Shipley, a 2013 first-round Draft pick, scattered five hits and pitched around two-out doubles in the first, third and fifth innings for his first MLB win.
"Super excited," Shipley said. "I can't take all the credit, the defense played great behind me all night. There were a couple balls that were hit hard. Can't say enough about our defense tonight."
The Dodgers scored off reliever Enrique Burgos in the seventh on Scott Van Slyke's RBI single and Joc Pederson's home run with two outs in the ninth off rookie Jake Barrett, who was credited with his third save. Pederson also homered the night before and is 8-for-20 in his last six games.
"Joc had good at-bats tonight," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. "He's doing things mechanically with the hitting [coaches] and really seeing the ball well. Seems like his mechanics, his body is in sync and he's squaring the ball up."

Segura led off the game with a home run on an 0-2 pitch from Scott Kazmir (9-4), who was facing Arizona for the first time in 10 years and lost for the first time since May 9. Arizona scored twice in the third inning on doubles by Yasmany Tomás, Chris Owings and Segura. The D-backs scored an insurance run in the seventh inning after Segura was drilled on the left shoulder by Pedro Báez's first pitch (97 mph), but remained in the game.
The Dodgers dropped a game in the standings and are two games behind the Giants, the first time they've lost ground since July 7.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Making strides: Shipley was far sharper in his second big league start than he was in his debut Monday in Milwaukee. In that game, Shipley allowed six runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings, but against the Dodgers he seemed in control the entire way.
"I think just obviously a lot of ground-ball outs so he was getting the ball down," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "His ball had some movement downwards. His curveball looked good and changeup was better than it was the first night and he just located his fastball." More >

Rookie record hunting:Corey Seager's two-out double in the third inning gave him 30 on the season, tying Eric Karros' Los Angeles rookie record set in 1992. The franchise rookie record is 52, set by Johnny Frederick in 148 games in 1929. Seager also is two home runs shy of Hanley Ramirez's single-season record of 19 for Los Angeles Dodgers shortstops.
Poor risk/reward: With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and a run in to cut the deficit to 4-1 on Van Slyke's single, Van Slyke was thrown out trying to steal second base to take the bat out of the hands of Chase Utley, who had doubled in his previous at-bat and homered the night before.
"That was just on his own," said Roberts. "He wanted to make something happen. But obviously in that situation you don't want to make an out on base. Scott will tell you, he thought he'd be safe. The guys have been around long enough, I don't feel I need to give everybody a hold sign. But with Chase up, he hit a home run the night before against a lefty, if you're going to steal a base you have to be 100 percent safe."
Barrett steps up: Right-hander Barrett got the final four outs of the game to earn his third save of the year and there could be more where that came from. Hale said that Barrett has earned the opportunity to get some more save chances.
"In time that would probably be my goal to try and be a closer," Barrett said. "But right now, being a rookie, no matter what situation I'm in, I'm just trying to go out there and do my best and stay focused and pound the ball down in the zone."

UPON REVIEW
Pinch-hitter Phil Gosselin was called out at second when he tried to stretch a single down the right-field line into a double. Second-base umpire Ryan Blakney called Gosselin out, but the D-backs challenged the call and after a review the call was overturned.

The Dodgers challenged plate umpire Bill Miller's call that a pitch did not hit Van Slyke in the ninth inning. The call would stand.

TOLES FINE AFTER SCARE
Dodgers right fielder Andrew Toles ran face-first into the fence that houses the out-of-town scoreboard on David Peralta's two-out triple in the ninth inning. Toles cut his lip, but after being treated by a trainer, finished the game, including grounding out in a ninth-inning at-bat.

WHAT'S NEXT
D-backs:Patrick Corbin will get the start in Sunday's series finale against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium at 1:10 p.m. MST. This will be Corbin's fourth start against the Dodgers this year and he is 0-2 with a 5.51 ERA against them.
Dodgers: In the homestand finale that starts at 1:10 p.m. PT, Yasiel Puig (hamstring) is expected to return to the starting lineup for the Dodgers, with Bud Norris on the mound. Norris is coming off a winning 6 1/3-inning start against Tampa Bay, but he's also 1-7 with a 12.65 ERA in nine career games against Arizona.
