Pipeline Preview: Calhoun looks to extend hitting streak

July 18th, 2017

Here's a look at top prospects to watch in today's Minor League action:
Hitter to watch: Willie Calhoun (Dodgers' No. 3), Oklahoma City at Memphis (8:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Calhoun, MLB Pipeline's No. 69 overall prospect, extended his hitting streak to 11 games on Monday as he connected on a two-run home run for Triple-A Oklahoma City. It was the 20th home run this season for the 22-year-old second baseman, and he's now hitting .310 with 61 RBIs through 87 games in the Pacific Coast League.

Pitcher to watch: Brent Honeywell (Rays' No. 2), Durham vs. Indianapolis (7:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Honeywell, the No. 22 overall prospect, is set to make his first start for Triple-A Durham since he took MVP honors in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game. Starting for the U.S. Team, the 22-year-old righty struck out four over two scoreless innings while hitting 98 mph on the radar gun and demonstrating command of his deep arsenal. In his time with Durham this season, Honeywell has pitched to a 4.54 ERA with 99 strikeouts in 79 1/3 innings.

Duel of the day: A.J Puk (A's No. 2) vs. (Padres' No. 14), Midland at San Antonio (8:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Puk's latest start for Double-A Midland was his best so far, as the No. 57 overall prospect allowed one earned run on five hits in five innings while walking one and striking out seven. While he's struggled a bit with the move up to the Texas League, the 6-foot-7 left-hander has continued to miss his share of bats, with 19 strikeouts in 18 1/3 frames. Overall, he's fanned 117 batters in 79 1/3 innings (13.3 K/9) between two levels.

De Los Santos, 21, has been excellent of late for San Antonio, posting a 4-1 record with a 2.60 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings across his past six starts. What's the more, the right-hander is coming off back-to-back seven-inning starts in which he allowed two or fewer earned runs while recording six and eight strikeouts.
