LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers second baseman Chase Utley became the ninth active player to drive in 1,000 runs when he doubled home Joc Pederson in the eighth inning of the Dodgers' 4-1 win over the Royals on Friday night.
Utley was asked what it means to reach 1,000 RBIs.
"That I was on a lot of good teams," he said as he jogged out of the clubhouse to beat the Fireworks Night traffic.
Manager Dave Roberts said he wasn't surprised that Utley seemed almost embarrassed to acknowledge the ovation.
"Not going to see too much emotion out of Chase," said Roberts, "but it's something we in the clubhouse have been talking about and anticipating, so for him, a big hit for us and another RBI, 1,000 RBIs and a great milestone."
Utley, a six-time All-Star in his 15th Major League season, received a standing ovation from teammates in the dugout when the achievement was recognized on the DiamondVision.
Among active second basemen, he ranks among the leaders in games played (1,795, 3rd), runs (1,067, 3rd), hits (1,820, 3rd), doubles (392, 2nd), triples (56, 1st), home runs (255, 2nd) and RBIs (1,000, 2nd).
