Kershaw throws 'light' bullpen session

July 10th, 2016

LOS ANGELES -- Clayton Kershaw threw off a mound on Sunday for the first time since going on the disabled list nearly two weeks ago, but he won't return to the Dodgers' rotation just yet.
Manager Dave Roberts announced that Bud Norris, Brandon McCarthy, Kenta Maeda, Scott Kazmir and Hyun-Jin Ryu would start the first five games of the second half.
"No Kershaw," Roberts said.
Kershaw, who was named to the National League All-Star team but is ineligible to play because he is on the disabled list, said he plans to throw a bullpen session while in San Diego for the All-Star Game festivities. When the club opens the second half with a three-game series in Arizona, Kershaw said he expects to throw to hitters at Dodger Stadium.
Provided he has no setbacks, a bullpen session after that would set Kershaw up to return to the rotation toward the end of the 10-game trip that includes stops in Washington and St. Louis -- or early on the next homestand that opens on July 26. He went on the disabled list on June 27 and received an epidural injection for pain management three days later.
"All good," Kershaw said after the abbreviated bullpen session, in which he threw all pitches and had no discomfort.
Roberts described Kershaw's mound session as "a touch-and-feel, a light 'pen" of about 25 pitches. It was Kershaw's first time throwing off a mound since going on the disabled list with a mild disk herniation in his lower back and came two weeks after his last start, a loss in Pittsburgh. A.J. Ellis caught him on Sunday.
"To see Clayton in a 'pen, throwing off a mound, is definitely encouraging," said Roberts.
