Dodgers grab college catcher Navin to start Day 3

The Dodgers selected Vanderbilt catcher Spencer Navin with their first pick on Day 3 of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft on Saturday.

As a junior this season with the Commodores, Navin hit .309 with four home runs, five doubles and 34 RBIs in 55 games. He reached base at a .439 clip and had a .406 slugging percentage.

The Dodgers used their 11th-round pick (No. 334 overall) on Navin, the second catcher they have drafted this year.

Navin threw out 13 of 24 runners attempting to steal this season and allowed three passed balls.

"Spencer may be the most talented catcher we have had in our program," Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin told the school's official website. "He's tough, durable and possesses overriding arm strength. He competes as well as anyone we have on our club. We will be very reliant on his leadership behind the plate. He is a very competitive hitter as well and a big part of our offense."
