LOS ANGELES -- Manager Dave Roberts said 19-year-old phenom Julio Urias would "probably" be sent down to Triple-A Oklahoma City following Monday's 7-5 win over the Orioles. The corresponding move is not yet known.
Given Urias' age and past inning totals, the southpaw had been on an unannounced innings limit for the season. Urias has pitched 77 1/3 innings between Los Angeles and OKC, with a professional career high of 87 2/3 innings in 2014. He was initially targeted to be sent down early, but several injuries to the rotation forced an extended stay that will likely end Tuesday.
"The decision was one I had to go face, but I'm happy to go work and come back," Urias said through an interpreter. "It's not hard. Obviously I would love to be here, love to spend the rest of my career here, but everything is for the best and I'm going to try to come back."
Urias' move opens up a rotation spot for Hyun-Jin Ryu, who is set to start Thursday. The team is likely to call up a bench player to fill the roster spot until then.
Urias struggled with his command against the Orioles, giving up six hits and five earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.
"I thought he was just missing on some pitches," Roberts said. "Really throwing to the big part of the plate, couldn't get the ball down, missing to the middle, couldn't command his breaking ball. He competed out there, but those are some good hitters."
