SAN DIEGO -- Evidently, Joc Pederson and the Dodgers aren't too keen on the idea of a cross-country flight early next week.
With a pair of timely doubles and three RBIs, Pederson lifted the Dodgers to a 9-4 victory over the Padres in Thursday's Petco Park finale. With the win, Los Angeles stayed alive in the race for home-field advantage in its upcoming National League Division Series against Washington.
"I think the narrative has been we don't hit left-handed pitching," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. "But I just got wind that we got a winning record vs. left-handed pitching now."
Padres starter Christian Friedrich cruised through four scoreless frames, before Pederson put the Dodgers on the board with an RBI double in the fifth. An inning later, Friedrich loaded the bases for Pederson, and the Padres called on José Torres. After a wild pitch plated the go-ahead run, Pederson delivered the game's crushing blow, a two-run double off the center-field wall.
Justin Turner, Yasiel Puig, Carlos Ruiz and Rob Segedin also had multiple hits for the Dodgers, who -- despite owning the tiebreaker -- trail Washington by two games in the race for home-field advantage. The Nationals beat the D-backs, 5-3, on Thursday.

"It was good to see [Justin Turner] swing the bat well, and [Yasiel Puig] break out," Roberts said. "There were some good things. So guys had some good at-bats."
The Dodgers have been careful with Julio Urías' workload as the season winds to a close, and did so again Thursday, pulling the 20-year-old after three shutout innings and 58 pitches. Urias surrendered just one hit and struck out five while walking a pair.

Friedrich, meanwhile, was given a longer leash, as he wrapped up a roller-coaster 2016 campaign. The left-hander was let go by both the Rockies and the Angels before Spring Training, only to sign with the Padres in early March. He parlayed that into 23 starts, and a solid shot at a place in the 2017 rotation.
"I'm just grateful for the opportunity," said Friedrich. "They kept believing in me and giving me the rock every five or six days. [I'm] just real excited to go into the offseason with a good base and build off that."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Put in Segedin: Segedin has started just 16 games for the Dodgers this season, but made the most of his latest chance in the lineup by putting an end to Friedrich's streak of 10 consecutive batters retired with his fifth-inning triple. That allowed him to score Los Angeles' first run, before going on to double, walk and cross the plate another time.

Singles night: The Padres jumped on top in the fourth inning with four-consecutive one-out singles. Carlos Asuaje (2-for-4) and Luis Sardiñas (3-for-4) knocked in the runs, but the Padres could've had more. Sardinas was caught straying too far off the first-base bag, and Friedrich's strikeout turned into an inning-ending double play.

Game of inches:Manuel Margot showed off a strong arm during the sixth, but it wasn't strong enough to prevent Charlie Culberson from scoring on Turner's single up the middle. Margot's throw pulled San Diego catcher Derek Norris up the line, and Culberson managed to barely slide safely around him to tie the game at 2.

Oh my!: Thursday's game marked the final broadcast at Petco Park for legendary play-by-play man Dick Enberg. After 50 years calling games across all sports, Enberg will call it a career Sunday in Arizona. Yangervis Solarte extended his career-long hitting streak to 14 games with a fifth-inning single, marking the longest streak by a Padre this season. Meanwhile, Atlanta's Freddie Freeman -- who entered the day at 30 games -- was held hitless, allowing Solarte to claim the Majors' longest active streak.

Dodgers: The Dodgers head north for their final series of the regular season Friday in San Francisco, where the team will continue to play for home-field advantage in the NLDS and also look to spoil the Giants' NL Wild Card hopes. Los Angeles sends Rich Hill to the mound for the first time since Sept. 20 at 7:15 p.m. PT, with Madison Bumgarner on the mound for the Giants.
Padres: Right-hander Edwin Jackson is set for his final 2016 start, as the Padres open a three-game series in Arizona on Friday at 9:40 p.m. PT. It's been a roller-coaster campaign for Jackson. He's been brilliant at times, but more often than not, he's struggled on the road.
