Weather moves Hill's next rehab hurdle

April 20th, 2019

MILWAUKEE -- Poor weather forecasts in Oklahoma City and Tulsa have scratched 's Monday night Minor League rehab start, and instead he will tentatively face hitters at the Dodgers’ Camelback Ranch-Glendale complex, manager Dave Roberts said on Saturday.

Hill has recovered from a strained left knee suffered in a March 17 Spring Training game. He threw a four-inning rehab start for Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday, and the club wants him to build arm strength to at least six innings and 90 pitches before he rejoins the Major League rotation.

If Hill passes the Monday test in Arizona, he could return to the Dodgers by next weekend. At that time, Ross Stripling is expected to go to the bullpen. Stripling’s next, and potentially final, start is scheduled for Thursday in Chicago.

Worth noting
• Catcher Russell Martin is doing everything he can to convince management he won’t need a rehab assignment before he returns from a lower back strain.

“Some players feel that it’s not necessary, so we’ll keep having a conversation to see what’s best for him and the Dodgers,” said Roberts.

Martin went through a strenuous workout on Saturday, including catching, throwing and sprinting. He has said he believes the injury, a recurrence of one that sidelined him for two weeks in the spring, is triggered by his crouch setup, and he is adjusting that as part of his recovery.

• To make room for the activation of Saturday night’s starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu, the Dodgers optioned right-handed reliever Josh Sborz to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Sborz was active for six days but did not pitch for the Dodgers.
