Roberts plans to mix and match 5 outfielders

LOS ANGELES -- A week ago, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was asked how he would balance playing time in an outfield that is suddenly even more crowded than it was at the beginning of the season.

With the Dodgers' injuries this season, Roberts said he preferred to hold off on thinking about those scenarios until all of his options were on the active roster. That moment came on Tuesday as Cody Bellinger was activated from the 10-day injured list, giving the Dodgers five legitimate outfield options.

Roberts said that he’ll mix and match his options over the last six games and wouldn’t commit to a set lineup against either left- or right-handers. The lineups for the last week and into the postseason will be determined based on recent production, overall matchups and which order gives the Dodgers the best chance to catch the Giants in the National League West standings.

On Tuesday, Roberts did indeed stick with the players who have been performing best over the last month. Despite having Bellinger back on the active roster and right-hander Yu Darvish on the mound, the Dodgers decided to start Gavin Lux in center field. Lux had no outfield experience in the big leagues prior to September, but the former top prospect has found success at his new position since being recalled.

Lux has made mistakes in the outfield, which was expected, but hasn’t cost the team any runs and has mixed in some solid defensive plays. His real surge, however, comes due to his improvement at the plate. Lux is hitting .368 in his last 14 games and has reached base in all but two of those games. Bellinger, on the other hand, has been one of the worst hitters in the Majors this season, posting a .159 batting average with nine homers. Bellinger does, however, give the Dodgers a Gold Glove outfielder.

Roberts wouldn’t commit to saying Lux will start every game, but it’ll certainly be difficult to take his bat out of the lineup.

“I think that Gavin is playing really good baseball,” Roberts said. “He’s getting better each day in the outfield. … We’ll see how it goes. I think, for me, each night [we’ll do] what we feel gives us the best chance to win a ballgame.”

Choosing between Lux and Bellinger in center field isn’t the only question the Dodgers need to answer. AJ Pollock started in left field on Tuesday and has, arguably, been the team’s most consistent hitter this season, when healthy. But Pollock is still recovering from a right hamstring injury, one the Dodgers initially feared would end his regular season. It remains to be seen if the Dodgers look to limit Pollock’s workload heading into the postseason.

Then there’s Chris Taylor, who was perhaps the most invaluable piece to the roster in the first half of the season. Taylor, who has been dealing with a neck injury, hasn’t been as productive over the last few months, hitting just .186 with three homers in August and September. The Dodgers could choose to have Taylor start in center field against left-handed pitchers. Mookie Betts starting in right field will be the only given for the Dodgers moving forward.

“I think if you look at the outfield, there’s five very good Major League outfielders now with the inclusion of Gavin,” Roberts said. “They all have their case to be in the lineup. I think the way I want to look at it, there’s really no wrong way to see an outfield lineup for these next six days and the postseason and beyond. My expectation is that they’ll just all be ready when called upon.”
