3 HRs so far, 1 off Kershaw: Ríos is raking

July 13th, 2020

LOS ANGELES -- Missing players, expanded rosters, Max Muncy’s finger injury and the addition of the designated hitter have created the perfect storm of opportunity for several Dodgers, most notably Edwin Ríos, who has already hit three home runs in Summer Camp intrasquad games -- including one off Clayton Kershaw on Sunday.

“He’s made a lot of strides in the last year and a half, offensively and defensively,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Even as we were going to break [Spring Training], he was part of the conversation, and that is a credit to Edwin. Now, you’re talking about expanded roster and the DH, and the at-bat quality, as we’ve seen recently, is getting better.”

With the Opening Day roster expanded to 30, there probably is room for both Ríos and Matt Beaty, similar left-handed hitters who can play the corners.

Worth noting

• Although non-roster speedster Terrance Gore was not initially part of the 60-man player pool, Roberts said that Gore has become part of the recent conversation. His speed would especially come into play as MLB enacts its rule of placing an automatic runner at second base to start an extra inning.

“There’s a lot of situations in a close ballgame that a guy like Terrance makes sense for any team, especially in these circumstances,” Roberts said.

• After a light day on Monday, the Dodgers will resume intrasquad games on Tuesday night.
