SAN DIEGO -- Infielder Gavin Lux, the Dodgers' No. 1 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, will be with the big league club sometime in September, but he might not be playing.

Manager Dave Roberts said the 21-year-old Lux “is in the conversation” for a callup, but would commit only to Lux being with the team “in some capacity.”

That sounds like Lux will serve an “apprenticeship,” as Roberts calls it, similar to the one catcher Will Smith had last September. Smith was physically with the club, taking part in drills and meetings, but not activated.

Lux is tearing it up at Triple-A Oklahoma City after a promotion from Double-A Tulsa. The 2016 first-round Draft pick is a shortstop who has also played second base.

Roberts said David Freese will be activated when the roster expands Sunday. Ross Stripling, who pitched three rehab innings Tuesday night, will also be activated. Suspended pitcher Julio Urías, scheduled for a rehab start on Thursday, is eligible to return Tuesday.

Alex Verdugo still has oblique soreness and won’t be activated during the first week of September, Roberts said.

The Dodgers would need to open a 40-man roster spot for Lux, as they will when Urias and Rich Hill are activated.

Sunday starter not named

• Roberts was non-committal on a starting pitcher for Sunday, which would be the turn for sixth starter Dustin May. Roberts said May will pitch Sunday, but won't necessarily start.

Arizona Fall League rosters announced

• Seven Dodgers Minor Leaguers are listed on the roster of the Glendale Desert Dogs for the Arizona Fall League, led by right-handed pitcher Mitchell White, ranked No. 9 in the Dodgers' system by MLB Pipeline.

The other Dodgers farmhands scheduled to play in the league: shortstop Omar Estevez (No. 15), second baseman Devin Mann (No. 17), right-handed pitcher Gerardo Carrillo (No. 22), right-handed pitcher Marshall Kasowski (No. 27), right-handed pitcher Brett de Geus and outfielder Jeren Kendall.

According to MLB Pipeline, White and Carrillo both have mid-90s fastballs with heavy sink, while Kasowski has averaged 14.8 strikeouts per nine innings as a pro by relying on a heater that features similar velocity and seems to rise at the plate. Mann has had a breakout first full pro season, batting .277/.358/.494 with 18 homers at Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga.
