The Dodgers’ active roster continues to battle injuries. That has now extended into the Minor Leagues, as the team’s top pitching prospect Josiah Gray will be shut down from throwing for at least a week with a right shoulder impingement.

Gray, the No. 48 overall prospect in the Minors according to MLB Pipeline, was a late scratch from his start for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday. Team broadcaster Alex Freedman said the right-hander was throwing in the outfield about 20 minutes before the start of the game. He was later scratched.

“He just felt a little discomfort,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “Just happy we and Josiah detected it earlier and didn’t try to push himself.”

With the Dodgers currently without a No. 5 starter as they wait for Tony Gonsolin to complete his rehab, Roberts said Gray was one of the candidates to potentially make a spot start over the weekend or early next week. It could’ve been Gray’s Major League debut, but that will now have to wait as the right-hander’s focus shifts to getting healthy.

“We’re just going to shut him down for a week to 10 days, not pick up a baseball, and then we’ll kind of see where he’s at, at that point,” Roberts said.

Gray impressed the Dodgers during last year’s Summer Camp and he also made a good impression this year during big league camp. He was coming off an impressive first outing of the season, a career-high 10-strikeout performance against Round Rock, the Rangers’ Triple-A affiliate.

Throughout his career in the Minors, Gray is 13-5 with a 2.40 ERA in 39 appearances (38 starts). He has recorded 216 strikeouts over 187 1/3 innings of work.
