Puig irritates knee strain, likely out Tuesday

DENVER -- Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig irritated a slight right knee strain and was removed from Monday's game against the Rockies in the sixth inning. He is not expected to start Tuesday night.

Puig said the irritation has bothered him for some time but worsened Monday when he reached first base on a throwing error by third baseman Nolan Arenado.

Puig nonetheless raced from first to third on Adrian Gonzalez's single and came up flexing his leg after sliding into third base. He remained in the game and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hanley Ramirez, but Skip Schumaker replaced Puig in right field for the bottom of the sixth inning.

After the game, Puig was examined by a local doctor. He received treatment and said he would receive more at the team hotel Monday night.

Manager Don Mattingly said the injury "didn't seem that serious" from the report he received because he said he's heard of the condition in the past.

Puig earlier had singled, lined into a double play and was hit by a pitch on the left arm.
