Speeding, recklessness charges against Puig dropped

LOS ANGELES -- Reckless driving and speeding charges against Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig were dropped Wednesday in a Chattanooga, Tenn., court, according to published reports.

Puig was arrested in April and charged with driving 97 mph in a 50-mph zone. He was playing for Double-A Chattanooga at the time.

According to The Chattanoogan, Judge David Bales read a letter from Dodgers executive vice president Lon Rosen detailing Puig's community outreach work in Los Angeles and Bales dismissed the case. Puig performed 12 hours of community service in Los Angeles after his arrest, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Puig did not speak to reporters as he left the courthouse.

Puig, 22, was promoted from Chattanooga to the Dodgers in June and had an immediate impact, winning the starting right-field job. On Monday he was listed as one of three finalists for the National League Rookie of the Year Award.
