LOS ANGELES -- Yasiel Puig's night ended early before the Dodgers' 8-2 win over the Reds on Tuesday night, as he was removed for disciplinary reasons as his team took the field to begin the seventh inning.
Puig was benched for not running out an RBI single in the sixth inning. Thinking he hit a home run, Puig lingered near the plate after the hitting a line drive into right field for what should have been a double.
"In my opinion, he should have been on second base," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "When we talk about playing the game the right way, we've got to be accountable. So that was the decision that I made."

Puig eventually rectified his mistake Tuesday by coming around to score from second on a fielding error by Joey Votto. Roberts, who was visibly upset in the dugout after the incident, pulled Puig from the game, putting Howie Kendrick in left field and sliding Trayce Thompson over to right to replace Puig.

"I should have run out that ball," Puig said through a translator. "It was a bad decision on my part. It was a good decision on the manager's part. It shows not only myself, but the rest of my teammates that you have to run out every single ball."
Roberts said the benching wasn't a cumulative effect from Puig's baserunning gaffe this weekend in San Diego, calling it an isolated incident. With Puig at second base against the Padres on Sunday, A.J. Ellis pulled the third baseman off the bag with a bunt down the line, but Puig remained frozen at second base as a frustrated Ellis was thrown out at first.
