LOS ANGELES -- It's hard to call the return of Yasiel Puig a success after just two games, but that didn't stop manager Dave Roberts from saying Monday that Puig could begin to see starts against right-handers as well as left-handers.
Puig was out of the lineup Monday against D-backs righty and familiar face Zack Greinke, but the outfielder is 3-for-6 with a homer, two walks and three RBIs since returning from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Josh Reddick got the start in right field, as he did in all but one game against right-handed starters before Puig returned.
"Yes, Yasiel will play against the left-handed pitchers, but I think there will be some opportunities against some right-handers, too," Roberts said. "For me, this matchup today, I felt good with Josh out there."
Reddick has struggled since being acquired on Aug. 1 at the Trade Deadline along with Rich Hill, hitting .196/.253/.239 with two RBIs in 99 plate appearances. In two games, Puig has surpassed Reddick's RBI total in his entire tenure with the Dodgers.
Of course, a veteran hitter with a proven track record breaking out of a slump would be nowhere close to unfamiliar to the Dodgers, and it might actually be in progress with Reddick. The outfielder hit his first homer for the Dodgers on Saturday and is 7-for-13 in his last four games.

De Leon's use depends on Kazmir
Jose De Leon looked strong in his MLB debut against the Padres in Sunday's 7-4 win, but whether he starts again for the Dodgers will depend on how Scott Kazmir comes out of his rehab start with Oklahoma City on Wednesday.
Kazmir is scheduled to throw six innings and 90 pitches in Game 1 of OKC's playoff series against Nashville.
"It's up in the air because of Kazmir," Roberts said. "Obviously Jose threw the ball well, but we got Kaz making the start in Oklahoma on Wednesday. Depending on how that goes, there's a lot of things up in the air. Obviously, Jose did a lot for himself and reinforced that confidence we have in him."

Wood gearing up for return
Alex Wood threw a bullpen session for the first time since his left elbow debridement surgery in July. He will pitch another session in the near future, then pitch in simulated games until he returns to the bullpen as a left-handed specialist. While he was a starter earlier this season, the timeline of his surgery made a return to the rotation impossible.
"With the calendar, there was no chance of that," Roberts said. "The next-best scenario is to get him out of the 'pen. In this situation, as long as he's healthy, there's no buildup. It's a matter of getting a hitter or two out, maybe getting an inning at most."
Wood has allowed a .248/.297/.330 line to left-handed batters in his career.

• Brandon McCarthy, making his first rehab start after hitting the DL with right hip stiffness, allowed nine hits and 10 earned runs (five earned) in four innings on Monday with Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga. He threw 79 pitches and 61 strikes along with a wild pitch.

• Luis Avilán was recalled on Sunday, giving the Dodgers 32 players on their active roster. He was last seen serving as the team's 26th man for its doubleheader in Colorado on Wednesday and hasn't appeared in a game since. This is the eighth time he's been recalled this season.
• Julio Urías said he will throw a bullpen session Tuesday to test the index and middle fingers on his left hand that were hit by a fastball as he squared to bunt on Friday. Roberts also said that the 20-year-old lefty is currently a member of the bullpen.
• Righty reliever Pedro Báez is expected to be recalled from Double-A Tulsa on Tuesday.
