CLEVELAND -- Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for making an obscene gesture in Tuesday's game against the Indians, Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday.
Puig is appealing the suspension and will not have to sit out a game until a ruling has been made.
A group of fans were heckling Puig during his second-inning at-bat, and after hitting a home run, Puig motioned to the fans as he was headed back to the dugout.
"I reacted that way and stooped to their level," Puig said following Tuesday's game through a translator. "It happened suddenly. It's something that came out. There's really nothing I can do at this point."
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who had a 10-year Major League career as an outfielder, experienced his fair share of heckling. He said that players can take it one of two ways: having fun with it or acting emotionally.
"I talked to him today, and it was just something that he wishes didn't happen," Roberts said. "It was a reaction of emotion on his part and bad judgment. I've just made it clear that I want to talk about all of our players in the context of what they do on the field and not off the field. He understood how I felt. It won't happen again."
