Back issue keeps Dickerson out of Giants' lineup

July 13th, 2019

MILWAUKEE -- Outfielder , who has emerged as a major sparkplug for the Giants' surging offense since being called up from Triple-A Sacramento three weeks ago, was out of Saturday's starting lineup against the Brewers due to back tightness.

Dickerson felt his back stiffen in the Giants' 10-7 win Friday and was removed from the game after playing eight innings in left field. He was replaced by pinch-hitter Donovan Solano in the top of the ninth.

"I could tell he wasn't quite right," manager Bruce Bochy said.

Dickerson, 29, has a history of back injuries and missed the entire 2017 season after undergoing surgery to remove bulging disk material from his lower back, but he said he doesn't believe his current issue is serious.

"It's feeling better," Dickerson said. "It's just kind of a little bit of a spasm thing. It comes and goes. I had it a couple times in Spring Training. I've probably dealt with it every year since I played professional baseball, even in college. It's one of those things that pops up. I could definitely play through it. I did yesterday. It's something I think will just go away in a couple of days."

Acquired from the Padres in exchange for Minor League right-hander Franklin Van Gurp on June 10, Dickerson has provided a major boost to the Giants' outfield, batting .340 with a 1.161 OPS and four home runs over 17 games. Given his injury history, the Giants are keeping a close eye on Dickerson's health and making sure to give him extra rest when he feels his body needs it.

"We have to monitor his workload, especially this year, with his issues with the back," Bochy said. "It had nothing to do with what happened. He just had four days off [during the All-Star break]. He needs to be honest with us when he needs those days."

Dickerson possibly was available off the bench Saturday and remains "questionable" for Sunday's series finale, according to Bochy.

Austin Slater, who crushed his fourth home run of the season Friday, also sat out Saturday's game against Brewers right-hander Zach Davies, who has been tough against right-handed hitters this season. Righties have posted a .694 OPS against Davies, compared to .845 for lefties.

To create more favorable matchups against Davies, the Giants decided to start Brandon Belt in left field, Pablo Sandoval at first base and Mike Yastrzemski in right on Saturday.

Vincent update

Right-handed reliever Nick Vincent, who has been on the injured list since May 29 with a right pectoralis strain, threw one inning in his first rehab appearance for the Arizona League Giants on Friday. Vincent allowed one hit in the 13-pitch outing.
