Suarez bests friend Machado in Giants' win

Lefty likely to begin sophomore season with Triple-A

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Giants left-hander has been facing Manny Machado since they were 10 years old and playing for rival travel ball teams outside of Miami. The longtime friends have plenty more matchups ahead of them now that Machado has signed with the Padres. It’s a challenge Suarez is looking forward to.

“Facing Manny, it’s going to be fun,” Suarez said. “I’ve known him since forever.”

Suarez bested Machado in their first encounter as National League West foes on Saturday afternoon, retiring San Diego’s star third baseman on a pair of flyouts in the Giants’ 10-3 win at Scottsdale Stadium. Suarez got an assist from right fielder Cameron Maybin, who ran into foul territory to make a nice sliding catch in the fourth inning.

Asked who has the all-time edge in their rivalry, Suarez said, “I guess we’d say it’s even for now.”

Suarez admitted that he was surprised to see Machado join the Padres, who signed the free-agent infielder to a 10-year, $300 million deal last month. Suarez trains with Machado and Yonder Alonso at the University of Miami over the offseason, but they never discussed his potential landing spots. Suarez had already reported to Giants camp by the time Machado signed, so he has not yet had the chance to reach out to his friend.

“I don’t have his number,” Suarez explained. “He’s always changing it. I wanted to see him today, but I was throwing, so I had to get ready. But eventually, when I see him, I’ll congratulate him.”

Suarez, 26, yielded one run on three hits over 3 1/3 innings against the Padres in his fourth appearance of the spring on Saturday. He threw a few more simulated innings after coming out of the game, as he is being stretched out like the rest of the Giants’ starters.

Suarez emerged as one of the biggest bright spots of the Giants’ 2018 campaign after logging a 4.31 ERA over 140 innings as a rookie, but he is unlikely to open the season in the rotation, as the club already has five starters in Madison Bumgarner, Dereck Rodriguez, Derek Holland, Drew Pomeranz and Jeff Samardzija.

Suarez could get a look as a long reliever or swingman, though it’s more likely he’ll be stashed at Triple-A Sacramento as rotation depth.

“I’m ready for whatever happens,” Suarez said. “That’s something I can’t control, so I’ve just got to keep competing.”
