Prospect Peguero joins Giants; Sanchez optioned

MLB.com

SAN FRANCISCO -- Recognizing Francisco Peguero's steady improvement and effort, the Giants recalled the outfielder from Triple-A Fresno on Friday and cleared roster room for him by optioning catcher Hector Sanchez to Fresno.

Peguero impressed observers during Spring Training, batting .328 with an .833 OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) in 25 games. Rated sixth on MLB.com's list of Giants prospects, the 24-year-old was among the last players cut from the Major League roster. He earned his recall by batting .415 with two home runs, 14 RBIs and a 1.017 OPS in 16 games for Fresno.

Sanchez hit .280 in 74 games as a rookie with the Giants last year, but a shoulder injury hampered him in Spring Training. Guillermo Quiroz overtook Sanchez as San Francisco's backup catcher. Meanwhile, the switch-hitting Sanchez couldn't duplicate his proficiency from the 2012 season, hitting .150 in 11 games.

Also, as expected, the Giants reinstated left-hander Jeremy Affeldt from the disabled list. Affeldt had been sidelined by a strained right side. Right-hander Sandy Rosario was optioned to Fresno after Wednesday's game, setting up Affeldt's return.
