Gaudin to throw simulated game Friday

LOS ANGELES -- Giants right-hander Chad Gaudin will throw another simulated game Friday in an attempt to be reinstated from the disabled list in time to pitch again this season.

"Hopefully, all goes well and we'd be able to activate him a couple of days after that," manager Bruce Bochy said.

Gaudin threw the equivalent of two innings in a simulated game Monday, but the Giants' decision-makers determined that he needed to sharpen his pitching repertoire further.

Gaudin, recovering from carpal tunnel syndrome, excelled in both the bullpen and in the starting rotation before being sidelined. He made his first 18 appearances in relief, recording a 2.05 ERA. Gaudin then replaced right-hander Ryan Vogelsong in the rotation and posted a 5-1 record with a 3.53 ERA in 12 starts. But Gaudin's physical unraveling was apparent in his final outing before he was sidelined, when he yielded eight runs and 11 hits in four innings on Aug. 16 at Miami.
