After propelling the Giants to a pair of wins while pitching his best ball of the season over the past seven days, veteran right-hander Jeff Samardzija earned National League Player of the Week honors for Aug. 28-Sept. 3.
It is the first ever Player of the Week Award for Samardzija. The San Francisco hurler is the only Giants player to win the award this season and the first since righty Johnny Cueto, who won in the final week of May 2016.
Samardzija started the week by shutting out the Padres for his first complete game of the year, allowing just three hits and fanning five without walking a batter on Aug. 28. He followed that performance with seven innings of one-run ball while racking up nine strikeouts to help his club prevail over the Cardinals despite settling for a no-decision on Saturday.

Samardzija held opponents to a .098 batting average throughout the week while throwing 70 percent of his pitches for strikes. He allowed just five hits and two walks across 16 innings
While the beginning of the 2017 season did not go quite as well as Samardzija (9-12) may have hoped, the 32-year-old has done a nice job of turning his year around, going 5-1 with a 2.60 ERA in his past eight starts. He entered May with a 6.32 ERA, but he has improved as the year has progressed, lowering that number to 4.31.
