Giants pick up win on D-backs' error in 12th

PHOENIX -- The Giants scored on a D-backs error in the top of the 12th inning to pull out a 6-5 win on Friday night at Chase Field in a game that lasted 5 hours, 11 minutes.

Giants reliever Ryan Vogelsong, who earned the win, dropped down a perfect bunt for an infield single to load the bases against D-backs reliever Randall Delgado with one out in the 12th. Angel Pagan followed with a grounder to D-backs shortstop Cliff Pennington, who tried to go home for the force out but his throw sailed past catcher Welington Castillo and allowed the winning run to score.

"We played very poor fundamentally, baserunning, defense, made too many mistakes," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "We just did a poor job."

Neither starter factored in the decision and were both long gone when the game was decided. D-backs starter Robbie Ray gave up a season-high eight hits, but held the Giants to just two runs in five innings and notched a career-high eight strikeouts. Giants starter Matt Cain allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings.

"It was just a hard-fought game on both sides." Giants manager Bruce Bochy said after his club won its fourth in a row. "We did a lot of good things. A lot of good things happened. The guys just fought hard. It was a great win."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Setting the table: The top of the D-backs' lineup provided offense early. Leadoff batter A.J. Pollock doubled in each of his first two at-bats and scored a pair of runs, including once on a triple by David Peralta in the third. Paul Goldschmidt struck for an RBI sacrifice fly in both the first and third innings, the second of which gave the D-backs an early 3-1 lead.

Now that makes Pence: The Giants threatened all night, but trailing the D-backs, 5-2 in eighth, put together a tying three-spot off reliever Enrique Burgos. Buster Posey drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Hunter Pence tied the score at 5 with a two-run homer to right, his fourth of what has been for him an abbreviated season.

"It happens so fast," said Pence, who also had a single and double in the game, "You just see the ball and try to get a good swing on it."

Extra, extra: The D-backs collected eight extra-base hits in the first seven innings, five of which were doubles. The last of those two-base hits came in the sixth when pinch-hitter Aaron Hill drove in Welington Castillo, who led off the inning with a double, to stretch the lead to 5-2.

Raising Cain: Cain made only his third start for the Giants after coming off the disabled list on July 2. He basically missed a year because of surgery to remove bone chips in his right elbow and an ensuing strain in his right forearm and he looked like it. The D-backs had five extra-base hits off him before an out was recorded in the fourth inning. He lasted five.

WHAT'S NEXT
Giants: The Giants send Jake Peavy (0-4, 4.71) out for the second game of the three-game series starting at 5:10 p.m. PT. Peavy, fresh off the disabled list because of a bad back, is making his fifth start of the season. He hasn't won a regular-season game since last Sept. 16.

D-backs: Chase Anderson (4-3, 3.91) takes the mound for the second game of the series at 5:10 p.m. MST at Chase Field. The D-backs right-hander struggled to keep the ball in the park in his last few starts prior to the All-Star break, allowing nine home runs over four outings. Anderson had given up just three homers in 13 starts prior to that stretch.
