A week after being rushed to a Bay Area hospital, Hall of Fame first baseman Orlando Cepeda is steadily recovering from a cardiac incident, the Giants said on Monday.
"The Cepeda family would like to thank the baseball family for its concern and well wishes for Orlando," the Giants' statement read. "We are pleased to report that Orlando continues to make significant progress every day and is showing major signs of improvement. Please continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers."
The 80-year-old made a public appearance in January to celebrate the 80th birthday of Willie McCovey at AT&T Park.
Cepeda broke into the Majors in 1958 as a first baseman with San Francisco and became one of the preeminent hitters of his era. An 11-time All-Star, Cepeda won a World Series and the National League Most Valuable Player Award with the Cardinals in 1967.
