Bumgarner sharp in 2nd Cactus League start

March 2nd, 2019

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Giants ace left-hander Madison Bumgarner rebounded from a rough Cactus League debut and delivered a solid performance against the Reds in the Giants’ 5-3 win over the Reds at Scottsdale Stadium on Friday night, striking out five and giving up one run over three innings.

Bumgarner yielded a leadoff home run to Jesse Winker to open the game, but he settled in and gave up only two singles over the rest of his outing. It was a step forward from his first exhibition start against the Cubs on Sunday, when he surrendered six runs on five hits over one-plus inning.

“I felt pretty good,” Bumgarner said. “The first time out there is fast and kind of a blur. I’ll probably remember more about this one than the first one. I was able to slow it down a little, and it felt good. The curveball was much better today than last time. The cutter is close. It’s not far off. It felt pretty good also.”

Shaw delivers monster home run

Chris Shaw launched a moonshot out to right field to snap a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning and lift the Giants to their fourth consecutive win in Cactus League play.

“That’s the longest ball I’ve seen in a long time,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “He got every bit of it. Good for him. Great at-bat there. Tied the ballgame. And his at-bats have really picked up here.”

Melancon’s outing

Mark Melancon made his first appearance for the Giants this spring in the fourth inning and gave up a solo shot to Phillip Ervin, followed by a triple to former Dodger Kyle Farmer. Still, Melancon managed to limit the damage by retiring the next three batters.

“Nice job of regrouping,” Bochy said. “He kind of had the same start as Bum. Second pitch left the ballpark, then the triple, but boy, he regrouped and made some good pitches. It’s good to get him out there and get some work for him.”

Fellow relievers Sam Dyson and Nick Vincent also made their Cactus League debuts for the Giants and each worked a scoreless inning.

Panda set to debut

Pablo Sandoval, who has been sidelined by a tweaked side muscle, is set to make his Cactus League debut against the Padres on Saturday in Peoria. Bochy said Sandoval may only bat left-handed if he still feels some discomfort on his right side.

Alberto claimed

Infielder Hanser Alberto was re-claimed off waivers by the Orioles on Friday. There was no immediate corresponding move for the Giants, who now have 39 players on their 40-man roster.

Up next

Left-handers Derek Holland and Drew Pomeranz will make their second exhibition outings and start a pair of split-squad games for the Giants on Saturday afternoon. Holland will face the Rangers at Scottsdale Stadium at 12:05 p.m. PT, while Pomeranz will take on the Padres at the Peoria Sports Complex at 12:10 p.m. PT. The latter game will air on MLB.TV.
