Padres lefty Weathers deals into sixth

April 23rd, 2021

Facing the reigning World Series champions for the second time in two career Major League starts, Ryan Weathers again was up to the moment.

Baseball’s No. 90 overall prospect continued his impressive big league debut season, blanking the Dodgers over 5 2/3 innings and allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six.

Six days ago, Weathers one-hit the Dodgers over 3 2/3 scoreless innings in his first big league start after opening his career with three relief appearances. On Thursday, the Dodgers’ recent look at the lefty didn’t pay off much for hitters.

Aside from walking Mookie Betts to lead off the game, plunking Max Muncy to start the second and yielding a leadoff single to right by his counterpart Walker Buehler in the third, Weathers faced no trouble. None of those three progressed past first base, and San Diego’s No. 5 prospect finished on a roll, retiring the final 11 batters he saw following Buehler’s hit.

Weathers was more economical than his last start, slinging 89 pitches, including 59 for strikes, and turning in his longest appearance since a six-inning start for Class A Fort Wayne against West Michigan on Aug. 5, 2019.

Weathers kept Dodgers hitters off-balance, primarily relying on his fastball, which touched 95.9 mph according to Statcast data, but also mixing in his slider, sinker and changeup. Four of Weathers’ strikeouts came on fastballs while the other two were on sliders.

The southpaw may be making a case to stay in San Diego’s rotation. Overall this year, Weathers is now 1-0 with a 0.59 ERA in 15 1/3 innings, fanning 16, walking five and holding opponents to a .083 average against.

Akil Baddoo, LF, DET

Baddoo ripped an RBI triple to left field in the bottom of the second inning, then pounded a double off the very top of the wall in left-center in the seventh. Through 14 games, Baddoo is now batting .295/.304/.750 with 10 extra-base hits among his 13 total. More»
