Fall 'Stache Game: Bishop over Tork by a hair

November 14th, 2021

Some of the best prospects in baseball faced off in the Arizona Fall League's Fall Stars Game on Saturday night. But a key subplot away from the diamond was what is on the faces of Spencer Torkelson and Hunter Bishop.

Torkelson, the No. 4 prospect in MLB, has done away with his clean-shaven look and grown a mustache during his time in the AFL, which was cut short by a sprained ankle on Oct. 20. His new facial hair was on full display during his interview in the seventh inning of Saturday's broadcast.

One inning later, Bishop, who was Torkelson's teammate at Arizona State and sports his own 'stache, was asked to grade their cookie dusters using the 20-to-80 scouting scale. So, the Giants' No. 6 prospect put on his evaluator cap and gave his take.

"I'm going to say mine’s about a 75 grade," Bishop said. "I’m gonna say Tork’s probably a 30, 35."

MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo then chimed in: “Maybe a future 40.”

“Alright, future 40 if he gets some more facial hair," Bishop responded.

Torkelson's MLB Pipeline profile contains multiple scouting grades in the 60s, with his power grading out as a 70. Perhaps Saturday night unveiled the former No. 1 overall pick's biggest weakness.

Bishop homered in the game to help the East Division team come away with a 6-5 victory.
