Giants give Vogt a try in left field

Bergen goes on injured list as Solano returns to Majors

SAN FRANCISCO -- Left field has been a revolving door for the Giants all season, and the carousel continued to spin Tuesday when made his first Major League start in the outfield in five years.

Vogt, who is primarily a catcher and first baseman, hadn't started in left field in the Majors since July 2, 2014, with the A's, though he made one appearance there with Triple-A Sacramento before the Giants added him to their roster earlier this month. Vogt became the eighth player to appear in left field for the Giants this season.

"I'm as ready as I'll ever be," Vogt said.

While strong winds blustered through Oracle Park on Tuesday, manager Bruce Bochy said he's more willing to experiment with left field given the degree of turnover he's seen there in recent years with the Giants.

"You've gotten rid of the fear of the unknown, I guess you could say," Bochy said. "When you're throwing [Travis] Ishikawa or guys out there that haven't played left field, and they did OK. They had their struggles, but we won with guys who are not plus defenders out there."

Bochy said he also wanted to get Vogt's left-handed bat in the Giants' lineup and give the slumping Mac Williamson a break against Braves right-hander Julio Teheran, who has held right-handed hitters to a .196 batting average and .665 OPS this season. Teheran has had a bit more trouble against lefties, who are hitting .247 with a .726 OPS against him.

Giants left fielders have combined to post a .535 OPS this season, the lowest mark in the Majors.

Though the Giants could have started Vogt at first base and shifted Brandon Belt to left field, Bochy said the club is now less inclined to move Belt back to the outfield since he's been battling inflammation in his right knee.

"He's doing a lot better, but until he gets through this, he may not [play left field] this year," Bochy said. "It may flare up occasionally, and that may keep him from going back out there."

Bergen lands on IL

The Giants placed reliever on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder strain and recalled infielder from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday. Solano, who was briefly demoted Monday to clear a roster spot for left-hander Andrew Suarez, restores the Giants' four-man bench and gives them another shortstop to back up Brandon Crawford.

Bergen has been dealing with lingering soreness in his shoulder and hopes the extra rest will expedite his healing, though he said he doesn't believe the injury is serious. A Rule 5 Draft pick, Bergen has posted a 4.24 ERA over 17 innings for the Giants this season.

"Everybody is just being cautious," Bergen said. "I'm not terribly worried about it, but obviously you don't want to be on the shelf. I'd rather be out there with my teammates, but it's hard enough to get guys out when you're feeling good, so I've just got to get it back going in the right direction."
