CHICAGO -- Steven Duggar and the Giants received good news during his visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles. Duggar found out the injured AC joint in his left shoulder will not require surgery.

Duggar was placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left AC joint on Aug. 8 before being transferred to the 60-day IL on Aug. 9.

"We got the best news we probably could have gotten with him. He's not looking at surgery," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said before Tuesday night's series opener vs. the Cubs. "He is looking at a four- to six-week rehab."

The 25-year-old outfielder underwent surgery on his left shoulder last September after tearing the labrum diving into second base. He reinjured the joint making a diving catch against the Nationals on Aug. 7.

While Duggar not needing to go under the knife again is positive news, the rehab timeline will likely end his season, barring the Giants making a late push into the playoffs. The team entered Tuesday 3 1/2 games behind the Cubs for the second National League Wild Card spot.

Sandoval getting second opinion

Pablo Sandoval left the team Tuesday night to meet with ElAttrache in Los Angeles to get a second opinion on his ailing right elbow. Sandoval was placed on the 10-day IL on Aug. 14, retroactive to Aug. 11, with right elbow inflammation.

The Giants third baseman received a cortisone injection Aug. 11, but has not seen much improvement since. The inflammation in Sandoval's elbow is caused by loose bodies (bone chips), which he said he's been dealing with sporadically since 2013.

"I think the ligament is fine," Bochy said. "We're going to get him looked at again just to make sure there's nothing else going on. Check this box off and we'll know exactly where we're at and what rehab we need to do to get him ready as soon as we can."
