Tuesday's top prospect performers

July 24th, 2019

Here's a look at Tuesday's top Minor League performers from each team's Top 30 Prospects list:

AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST

Blue Jays: Jonathan Davis, OF (No. 28) -- 2-for-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI (Triple-A Buffalo)
Not known for his power, Davis put on an impressive display in Buffalo's win over Charlotte. The 27-year-old bumped his season home run total up to nine as he hit a two-run homer in the first and a solo blast in the fourth for his second two-homer game of the year. Davis is hitting .243 through 50 games with the Bisons this year and has also spent time up in Toronto, where he is batting .140 over 18 games. Blue Jays prospects stats »

Orioles: No Orioles prospects had noteworthy performances in the Minor Leagues on Tuesday.

Rays: Vidal Brujan, 2B (No. 6) -- 1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI (Double-A Montgomery)
Brujan extended his hitting streak to five games as he hit his third homer of the year, a two-run shot, which proved to be the different in Montgomery's 2-1 win over Tennessee. While Brujan is far from a power threat, the 21-year-old is an advanced hitter from both sides of the plate and has a knack for making hard contact. Brujan also has 70-grade speed and projects to be a slightly above-average defender. Rays prospects stats »

Red Sox: Denyi Reyes, RHP (No. 18) -- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K (Double-A Portland)
Reyes extended his scoreless streak to 13 innings as he spun his second consecutive scoreless start for Portland. The 22-year-old, whom the Red Sox signed in 2014, threw 64 of his 90 pitches for strikes and retired eight of the first nine batters he faced. Reyes, who is pitching at the Double-A level for the first time, struggled a bit early in the year, but has seemingly found his rhythm and is 4-0 with a 1.04 ERA in July. Red Sox prospects stats »

Yankees: Joe Harvey, RHP (No. 28) -- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre)
After blowing a save opportunity for the first time this year in his last outing, Harvey closed out the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 11-6 win over Columbus with two scoreless frames, striking out a pair after allowing a double to the first batter he faced. The 2014 19th-round Draft pick has been stellar in the Minors this season, and he sports a 2.88 ERA and .157 average against in 21 appearances with the RailRiders. Harvey spent some time in the big leagues this year after being called up on April 25, allowing five earned runs in ten frames over nine outings. Yankees prospects stats »

AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL

Indians: Nolan Jones, 3B (No. 2, No. 42 in MLB) -- 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI (Double-A Akron)
After going 0-for-2 in the first game of a doubleheader, his third straight hitless performance, Jones got back on track in the nightcap with a pair of hits, including his third homer with Akron. The homer, a two-run blast in the seventh inning, was Jones' 10th of the season and brought his cumulative average to .281. The 21-year-old hit .286 through 77 games with Class A Advanced Lynchburg before he was promoted to Akron following an appearance in the SiriusXM Futures Game. Indians prospects stats »

Royals: Austin Cox, LHP (No. 21) -- 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 10 K (Class A Advanced Wilmington)
Cox set a career high with 10 strikeouts as he threw 65 of his 91 pitches for strikes in a no-decision against Potomac. The 22-year-old, a fifth-round pick from last year's Draft, is already looking like a steal early in his career. Cox impressed last year in his professional debut, pitching to a 3.78 ERA with 51 strikeouts over 33 1/3 innings. Over 19 starts (109 2/3 innings) in the current campaign, despite moving up a level, Cox has pitched to a 2.63 ERA and has amassed 122 strikeouts. Royals prospects stats »

Tigers: Isaac Paredes, INF (No. 4) -- 1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI (Double-A Erie)
Paredes' eighth homer, a two-run shot, proved vital as Erie topped Altoona, 3-1. The 20-year-old is hitting .255 through 88 games this season after hitting .278 over 123 games a season ago. Paredes doesn't strike out often and has a contact-first approach at the plate, but projects to have average power. Defensively, Paredes is a capable defender, but his true value may be in the fact that he can play all over the infield, a skill that is becoming increasingly valuable. Tigers prospects stats »

Twins: Royce Lewis, SS (No. 1, No. 7 in MLB) -- Game 1: 1-for-4, HR, RBI, Game 2: 1-for-4, 2B (Class A Advanced Fort Myers)
Lewis picked up extra-base hits in each half of Fort Myers' doubleheader on Tuesday. The 20-year-old hit his ninth homer of the year in the first game and then extended his hitting streak to five with a double in Game No. 2. Lewis, the No. 1 overall pick from the 2017 Draft, ascended up the ranks and hit .292 over two levels a season ago, but has hit just .243 so far this year, his first full season with the Miracle. Twins prospects stats »

White Sox: Nick Madrigal, 2B (No. 4, No. 38 in MLB) -- 2-for-4, 2 SB (Double-A Birmingham)
Madrigal can flat out rake and he's proving it on a nightly basis, regardless of the competition. After hitting .272 with Class A Advanced Winston-Salem, the 2018 draftee was promoted to Birmingham, where he's hitting .370 through 35 games. Not only is the 22-year-old working on a six-game hitting streak, but he has hits in 22 of his past 23 games. While Madrigal's bat is certainly his calling card, he's also a capable defender and could develop into a Gold Glove Award winner. White Sox prospects stats »

AMERICAN LEAGUE WEST

A’s: A.J. Puk, LHP (No. 2, No. 34 in MLB) -- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K (Triple-A Las Vegas)
Puk threw 13 of his 17 pitches for strikes and looked like a pitcher who began his career on the fast track to the Majors. The A's grabbed Puk with the sixth pick of the 2016 Draft and the Florida product was rocketing through the system until he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018. Puk has only logged 16 1/3 innings this year as he works his way back from surgery, but assuming all goes well as he continues to get back in rhythm, he may be in Oakland in the near future. If not, a 2020 debut almost seems like a certainty, perhaps as a member of the Opening Day rotation. A's prospects stats »

Angels: Jared Walsh, 1B/OF/LHP (No. 18) -- 3-for-6, 3 HR, 4 RBI (Triple-A Salt Lake)
It's hard to think of a better way to break out of a funk than the way Walsh did on Tuesday. Entering play on a 1-for-13 skid, Walsh reversed his fortunes with the first three-homer game of his career. The two-way player, who was certainly more of a hitter than a pitcher against Albuquerque, went deep in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, bringing his season total to 23. A 39th-round pick from the 2015 Draft, Walsh has already defied the odds as he made his Major League debut earlier this season. In the Majors, Walsh has hit .242 over 33 at-bats and has yielded one run over four appearances (4 1/3 innings) on the mound. Angels prospects stats »

Astros: No Astros prospects had noteworthy performances in the Minor Leagues on Tuesday.

Mariners: No Mariners prospects had noteworthy performances in the Minor Leagues on Tuesday.

Rangers: Osleivis Basabe, SS/2B (No. 18) -- 2-for-5, 2 RBI (AZL Rangers)
Make that three straight multihit performances for Basabe, an 18-year-old, whom the Rangers signed in 2017. Basabe began his career last summer in the DSL, where he hit .344, and he's continued to rake this year in his stateside debut. The Venezuela native has only played in 15 games, but is hitting .397 and has hits in 13 of those games, including nine multihit performances. Rangers prospects stats »

NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST

Braves: Kyle Muller, LHP (No. 10) -- 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 6 K (Double-A Mississippi); Huascar Ynoa, RHP (No. 11) -- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K (Triple-A Gwinnett); Freddy Tarnok (No. 14) -- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K (Class A Advanced Florida)
Tuesday night was a strong one for Braves pitching prospects throughout the system. Muller, a second-round pick from the 2016 Draft, hasn't yielded an earned run in either of his past two outings (11 1/3 innings) and has pitched to a 3.30 ERA through 20 starts. Ynoa, a 21-year-old whom the Braves acquired from the Twins in 2017, got off to a rough start and was getting shelled early in the year, but has now given up just one run over his last 12 innings on the mound. Tarnok also threw well and has held the opposition to one run or fewer in five straight starts. The 20-year-old has a 5.60 ERA this season, but has been dominant this month, pitching to a 0.90 ERA over 10 innings. Braves prospects stats »

Marlins: Sixto Sanchez, RHP (No. 1, No. 21 in MLB) -- 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K (Double-A Jacksonville)
Sanchez came one strikeout shy of his season high as he put together his third straight quality start and his third scoreless outing of the year. Sanchez, whom the Marlins acquired from the Phillies over the offseason, got off to a fast start as he retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced. The 20-year-old has pitched to a 3.20 ERA over 13 starts with the Jumbo Shrimp. After allowing eight runs over 3 2/3 innings on July 2, Sanchez has yielded just three earned runs over 20 1/3 innings. Marlins prospects stats »

Mets: Simeon Woods-Richardson, RHP (No. 7) -- 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K (Class A Columbia)
Another start, another strong performance from Woods-Richardson, who has yielded two earned runs or fewer in nine straight outings. The 18-year-old, a second-round pick from last year's Draft, has a 4.25 ERA this season, but take out the month of May (10.89 ERA over six starts) and the numbers look a lot better. The right-hander has the most upside of any pitcher in the Mets' system, but he's thrown just 95 innings as a professional, so he still has a ways to go before fulfilling all that potential. Mets prospects stats »

Nationals: Luis Garcia, INF (No. 2, No. 60 in MLB) -- 2-for-3, HR, RBI (Double-A Harrisburg)
Garcia isn't known for his power, but he did tap into a bit as he hit his first homer of the year in the sixth inning on Monday's game. The 19-year-old got off to a slow start this year and is hitting .259 through 93 games, but his bat has been better lately. Garcia hit .312 in June and is hitting .288 this month, showing his quick swing and his plus bat-to-ball skills. Garcia is sure-handed, has solid range and a plus arm, but it remains to be seen whether he ultimately winds up at second base or shortstop. Nationals prospects stats »

Phillies: Cornelius Randolph, OF (No. 25) -- 3-for-3, HR, 3 RBI (Double-A Reading)
Randolph's power drought came to a close as he homered for the first time since June 9. While the homer, his sixth, was nice, so, too, was the multihit performance, Randolph's first since July 14. The 22-year-old, a former first-round Draft pick (2015), has struggled a bit each of the past two seasons and is back in Double-A after spending all of 2018 with Reading. After hitting .241 with five homers last year, Randolph is hitting .245 with six homers in the current campaign. Phillies prospects stats »

NATIONAL LEAGUE CENTRAL

Brewers: Eduarqui Fernandez, OF (No. 22) -- 3-for-5, 3 HR, 3 RBI (DSL Brewers)
After putting together a three-hit performance on Monday, Fernandez upped the ante Tuesday with a trio of homers, his first career multi-homer game. Fernandez, a Dominican Republic native signed by the Brewers last July, is hitting .236 with seven homers through the first 44 games of his career. Still just 17 years old, Fernandez is an aggressive hitter and has the ability to drive the ball to all fields. While he already has good power, he's expected to have even more in the future and he's also a plus runner, meaning he's likely to stick in center field. Brewers prospects stats »

Cubs: Duane Underwood Jr., RHP (No. 25) -- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K (Triple-A Iowa)
Underwood continues to excel out of the bullpen for Triple-A Iowa, as the 2012 second-round pick struck out three batters in two scoreless innings to lower his ERA as a reliever to 2.88. The 25-year-old right-hander went 2-5 with a 6.46 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and .275 batting average against in 10 starts before moving to a relief role. Since the move, he has held hitters to a .223 mark, posting a 1.16 WHIP and striking out 31 in 25 innings over 17 outings. Cubs prospects stats »

Cardinals: Elehuris Montero, 3B (No. 4) -- 2-for-4 (GCL Cardinals)
Montero, playing in the GCL on a rehab assignment, picked up a couple of hits in just his second game since May 26. The 20-year-old landed on the injured list after playing in 25 games and hitting .219 for Double-A Springfield. Signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2014, Montero projects to be an impact hitter in the future and showed as much last year when he hit .315 with 16 homers over 127 games between the Class A and Class A Advanced levels. Cardinals prospects stats »

Pirates: Ke'Bryan Hayes, 3B (No. 2, No. 36 in MLB) -- 2-for-5, 2B (Triple-A Indianapolis)
After a slow start to the season, Hayes appears to be figuring out how to hit at the Triple-A level. The 22-year-old, a first-rounder from the 2015 Draft, is hitting .317 in July and has hits in nine of his past 10 games. While Hayes may have struggled out of the gate, his ability to hit was never in question. Defensively, Hayes may be the best defensive third baseman in the Minors. Pirates prospects stats »

Reds: Scott Moss, LHP (No. 14) -- 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8 K (Double-A Chattanooga)
After getting shelled for five runs over 4 1/3 innings in his last start, Moss bounced back with a strong outing for the Lookouts. The 2016 fourth-rounder threw 57 of his 94 pitches for strikes and lowered his ERA to 3.47 in the process. Moss has also struck out 119 over 96 innings in his first Double-A experience. Reds prospects stats »

NATIONAL LEAGUE WEST

D-backs: Matt Peacock, RHP (No. 29) -- 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K (Double-A Jackson)
Strong starts are the norm for Peacock these days and he delivered once again in a win over Mississippi. The 25-year-old South Alabama product has surrendered one run or fewer in three of his past four starts and boasts a 2.48 ERA through 76 1/3 innings. Peacock, whom the D-backs grabbed in the 23rd round of the 2017 Draft, doesn't miss a ton of bats -- the six strikeouts were his second most all year -- but he does get a lot of groundouts with his heavy sinker and is often around the zone. D-backs prospects stats »

Dodgers: Gavin Lux, SS/2B (No. 2, No. 30 in MLB) -- 2-for-5, HR, 3 RBI (Triple-A Oklahoma City); Dustin May, RHP (No. 3, No. 50 in MLB) -- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K (Triple-A Oklahoma City)
It's pretty easy to make an argument that Lux is the hottest hitter in the Minor Leagues. Not only has the 21-year-old reached base in 32 straight games, but he's homered seven times in his past nine games and is hitting a ridiculous .481 over 19 games since he was promoted to Triple-A. While the .481 mark isn't sustainable, it's not like Lux was struggling before. The 2016 first rounder hit .313 over 64 games with Double-A Tulsa prior to his promotion. While Lux was dominating on the offensive end, May was carving up the Nashville bats. The 21-year-old threw 61 of his 97 pitches for strikes in what was his best start since being promoted earlier this month. May has made four starts with Oklahoma City and pitched to a 2.53 ERA. Prior to that, he posted a 3.74 mark over 15 outings with Double-A Tulsa. Dodgers prospects stats »

Giants: Marco Luciano, SS (No. 3) -- 2-for-5, RBI (AZL Giants Orange)
It's hard to keep Luciano down for long. A night after he went 0-for-3 at the plate, the 17-year-old bounced back with his 11th multihit performance in 26 games this season. Signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2018, Luciano has tremendous bat speed and a solid approach at the plate. Luciano is hitting .337 early in his career and has also shown surprising power with eight homers. Giants prospects stats »

Padres: Xavier Edwards, 2B/SS (No. 8) -- 4-for-5 (Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore)
Edwars came one hit shy of his career high in his third four-hit effort of the season. The 19-year-old began the year with Class A Fort Wayne, where he hit .336 over 77 games. The Padres then challenged Edwards with a trip to Lake Elsinore and so far he's responded well, hitting .302 over 13 games. Edwards isn't a power threat, but he has advanced knowledge of the strike zone, uses the whole field and, once he gets on base, he possesses the plus-plus speed necessary to wreak havoc on the basepaths. Padres prospects stats »

Rockies: Josh Fuentes, 3B/1B (No. 9) -- 1-for-3, HR, 4 RBI (Triple-A Albuquerque)
Fuentes extended his hitting streak to nine games with his 12th homer of the year, a two-run shot in a loss to Salt Lake. The 26-year-old has been on an absolute tear lately and has homered five times over his past seven games. Fuentes, who has hit over .300 in each of the past three seasons, is hitting .272 on the year and also made his Major League debut earlier this season, where he went 2-for-18 over nine games. Rockies prospects stats »
