Zito may be in line for a break

DENVER -- The Giants haven't announced their starter for Sunday in Arizona, but because they are off on Thursday, they have the option of skipping Barry Zito and pitching Yusmeiro Petit on regular rest.

Zito is 4-10 with a 5.81 ERA in 27 starts. But in 12 games (10 starts) on the road, Zito is 0-8 with a 9.61 ERA and opponents are batting .411 against him. Zito has made 16 starts since he last won on May 30 and has a seven-game losing streak. The latest loss was 6-1 to the Rockies here on Monday, when Zito lasted four innings and gave up five runs on nine hits, including two homers.

Petit took the turn of injured Matt Cain on Tuesday. He held the Rockies to six hits and two runs in six innings while recording his first Major League victory in four years.
