Chevron and the Giants Community Fund team up to introduce STEM Programming to the Junior Giants

Activities will teach Junior Giants players STEM skills – setting them up for success in school and beyond

June 11th, 2019

San Francisco, CA June 11, 2019– Chevron and the Giants Community Fund are teaming up to bring science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to Junior Giants participants this summer. Approximately 24,000 youth in 370 cities across California will learn how STEM plays a role in the game of baseball during their Junior Giants season. Chevron and the Giants Community Fund hope to inspire the next generation of innovators.

The Junior Giants STEM programming, “The Giant Launch,” will be part of week four in the existing eight-week programming that teaches participants essential life skills—including health, education and violence prevention activities.

“The Junior Giants is more than just baseball and softball leagues – it is a place where kids can grow in all aspects of their development. We’re excited to add a STEM focus to our eight-week educational program that will help position our players for future success,” said Sue Petersen, Executive Director of the Giants Community Fund. “By teaming up with Chevron to integrate STEM into the program, we will foster crucial skills needed to succeed in school and beyond.”

During the “The Giant Launch,” Junior Giants teams will explore the trajectory of a baseball with a launch angle lesson. The activity will encourage players to think about how math and science play a role in everyday activities—such as baseball and softball— and wherever else they may see real-life applications of these concepts.

Since 2013, Chevron has invested $400 million worldwide in education partnerships and programs. Whether by educating students, training teachers, providing classroom resources, supporting educational standards, funding out-of-school activities, or preparing workers for career success, Chevron works to help students access educational and STEM-related opportunities.

“Innovative and fun STEM programs motivate young people to pursue their dreams and find ways to create a better future for themselves and their communities,” said Dale Walsh, vice president of Corporate Affairs. “We support STEM to increase opportunities for students, to give back in communities where we work and to create a skilled workforce that benefits everyone. We are proud to partner with the Giants Community Fund to inspire the innovators of the future.”

Registration for players and coaches is open through mid-June and can be done online at gojrgiants.com.
