Giants sign first-round pick Patrick Bailey

July 1st, 2020

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The San Francisco Giants have signed catcher Patrick Bailey, the 13th overall selection from this year’s First-Year Player Draft, the club announced today.

Bailey, 21, hit .296 with a team-leading six home runs and 20 RBI over 17 games (16 starts) during the 2020 season, which was cut short due to COVID-19. Despite the shortened season, Bailey ranked tied for second in RBI (20), third in walks (17) and tied for fourth in home runs (6) among all ACC players. Three of Bailey’s six homers in 2020 were grand slams, which he hit over an 11-day span. Bailey was awarded the 2020 Johnny Bench award on June 18th, which is annually given to the nation's top Division I male and female college catchers. He is the 21st player to receive the award since its inception and the third member of the Giants organization to have won the collegiate award (Buster Posey in 2008 and Joey Bart in 2018).

As a sophomore in 2019, Bailey was named First Team All-ACC, ABCA All-Region and Collegiate Baseball Third Team All-American after compiling a .288 clip with 68 hits, 17 doubles, 10 homers and a .513 slugging percentage. Bailey was also one of 14 semifinalists for the Buster Posey Award, given to the nation’s best catcher. In 2018, Bailey led all ACC freshmen in hitting (.321), total bases (113) and slugging (.604) while also setting a new NC State freshman home run record (13) on his way to being named the ACC Freshman of the Year. He also threw out 11 runners on the base paths and recorded a .983 fielding percentage.

The 6-foot-2, 207-pounder became the ninth first-round pick in NC State history and is tied for the second-highest drafted player out of NC State in the regular June Draft. While at NC State, Bailey was teammates with Giants prospect Will Wilson, who was originally drafted by the Angels as the 15th overall pick in 2019. Bailey was also teammates with the Giants 2020 third round selection, LHP Nick Swiney, for three seasons at NC State.
