CLEVELAND -- After re-signing left-hander Oliver Pérez and trading for righty Nick Wittgren over the past two weeks, the Indians continued to focus on their bullpen Friday evening, adding another relief option into the mix.
MLB.com confirmed that the Indians are in agreement with free-agent RHP Alex Wilson on a Minor League deal with an invitation to Spring Training. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, Wilson will get $1.25 million if he makes the club's big league roster and can receive another $750,000 in performance bonuses.
Wilson, who was non-tendered by the Tigers at the end of November, has spent the last four seasons in Detroit and posted a 3.36 ERA in 59 appearances (61 2/3 innings) with a 1.054 WHIP in 2018. The 32-year-old righty was a big contributor for the Tigers, having pitched in at least 59 games in each of the last four years.
Wilson wasn't the only free agent who was signed by Cleveland on Friday, as Matt Joyce announced his agreement with the Tribe on Twitter. Joyce was also signed to a Minor League contract with an invitation to big league camp.
Joyce, 34, has spent the last two seasons with the A's. In 2018, the outfielder hit .208 with seven home runs and 15 RBIs in 83 games while battling through lumbar strains. He has the most experience in the corner outfield spots with a little time spent in center.
The 11-year veteran began his career in Detroit in 2008 and has had stints with Tampa Bay, Los Angeles (Angels), Pittsburgh and Oakland. Joyce was selected to the American League All-Star team in 2011 with the Rays, hitting .277 with 19 homers and 75 RBIs that season. In his last healthy year in 2017, the outfielder batted .243 with 25 home runs and 68 RBIs. Not only does Joyce give the Indians another outfield option, but he also brings a veteran presence to a young roster.
