Indians invite four players to Major League camp

CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has signed free agents C BRETT HAYES, OF DESTIN HOOD, C ADAM MOORE and 1B/OF JERRY SANDS to Minor League contracts with non-roster invitations to Major League camp.

Hayes, 30, spent most of the first four months of the 2014 season backing up A.L. All-Star Salvador Perez in Kansas City before spending the final month of the campaign in Triple-A Omaha. He began his professional career ten years ago in the Florida Marlins system after being selected in the 2nd round of the 2004 First-year Player Draft out of Nevada-Reno. He has appeared in 175 Major League games over the last six seasons since 2009.

Hood, 24, has spent his entire professional career to date in the Washington Nationals organization after being selected by Washington in the 2nd round (55th overall) of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. He split the 2014 season between AA Harrisburg and AAA Syracuse, hitting a combined.298 (116-389) with 26 doubles, 11 homers and 42 RBI in 106 games (.348/.460/.808). He was a league all-star selection in 2010 (South Atlantic) and 2011 (Carolina) and entered the 2013 season rated as the 17th-best prospect in the Nationals chain according to Baseball America. Hood was a two-sport standout at St. Paul's Episcopal High School (AL) and was committed to play baseball and football for the University of Alabama prior to signing with the Nationals in 2008.

Moore, 30, has appeared in 86 Major League games with Seattle, Kansas City and San Diego after being selected by the Mariners in the 6th round of the 2006 draft. He spent most of the 2014 season in AAA El Paso in the San Diego organization, hitting .298 (93-312) with 20 doubles, 12 homers and 34 RBI in 91 games (.360/.484/.844). He appeared in 9 games for the Padres in September.

Sands, 27, began the year in Triple-A Durham in the Tampa Bay Rays system, hitting .268 (51-190) over the first two months of the season with 12 doubles, 9 home runs and 36 RBI in 54 games for the Bulls (.352/.474/.825). He was promoted to Tampa Bay on June 1 and appeared in 12 games for the Rays before his season ended on June 23 (left wrist surgery). He was a 25th round selection of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008 and appeared in 70 games for the Dodgers in 2011-12, hitting in 14 straight games for the Dodgers, September 12-26, 2011.
